How difficult is it to learn to speak Spanish?
The only language I currently know is English and I'm thinking about trying to learn to speak Spanish for many reasons.
At the current time i've no interest in learning to read or write it, just speak. I'd like to learn enough to be able to hold decent conversation and be able to socialise with people.
I like to think of myself as being quite intelligent and generally pick things up pretty easily if it makes any difference.

It's easy in some ways but hard in others. The pronunciation is easy so I guess that's good news for those trying to speak, also the grammar is straightforward in some places. It's an easy Romance language at least compared to French or Portuguese.
BUT
The sentence structure can be very different from English, gender and agreement will take some getting used to, and there are many many tenses for verbs you need to master. This includes the subjunctive which is usually quite challenging for English speakers because. You have to learn the subjunctive if you want to move beyond speaking like a child, or only stating facts...The good news is once you master the subjunctive you'll be able to apply it to any other Romance language you learn.
In fact once you master Spanish you can learn Portuguese very easily, and Italian, and even French will not be as difficult.
If you go to a Spanish speaking place and immerse yourself you can pick it up but if you want to learn it, I think you'll find it's easy at the beginning as you move up it becomes more intricate and challenging.

If it's easy for you to pick up new things and if you're really willing to learn a new language, you could try listening to songs in spanish and watch movies in spanish (probably with english, later with spanish subtitles, so you get what they're saying) If you want, you can translate some lyrics and then create your own vocab list with useful words and phrases. I've been learning spanish since year 9 at school but I started "learning" it that way probably half or one year ago and my teacher was impressed by how good I was already when I entered class and kept saying I was way ahead of everyone else, even though I didn't try hard to learn it, just by listening to spanish music and watching spanish movies, occasionally read an article in spanish and try understanding what it means. If you want to speak, you should really practise with someone, and for pronounciation it's also good to sing along with the songs.

Many folks will inform you Spanish is convenient.I am certain they recognise little or no. Yet for an English speaker Spanish is likely one of the simplest languages to be taught. However it's not as convenient as English.Writing and spelling in Spanish is simpler.

For me, its the worst language ever in the whole entire world. But for me, Japanese is easy, but then again, strangly enough, i am hardwired for asian languages, so really, its just a matter of opinion. AND its not as easy as adding an o to the end of a sentence. Did you know that when you take advanced spanish classes and not beginners, you have to conjugate like half the sentence, and its annoying

Spanish is less difficult than other languages, because its phonetic and the grammar is simpler, but with some exceptions, likegender differences for nouns ( he =-el, She =-La.)
Hope this helps
