Yellowstone's "Deep Breath"?

Big deal or 2012 hysteria?

And when did Michio Kaku become a volcanologist?

    Neither.

As most of us know, 2012 hysteria is just that, hysteria - misplaced, uninformed hysteria at that.

That parts of the Yellowstone caldera have uplifted in recent years is not a big deal, nor is it news to anyone who knows about Yellowstone. It's been slowly rising for about 6 years. Before that, it was deflating for about 10 years, before that it was rising for about 20 years, etc. These are normal cycles.

Michio Kaku is clearly not a volcanologist - he a physicist for whom, I, until now, had great respect.

What a dishonest, uninformed interview he just gave. I'm disappointed in him.

Stop betting on 2012 on this one. Many scientists are arguing whether Yellowstone could blow at any time. While there's no data to suggest today, tomorrow, or 100 years from now will be the day, the fact is that Yellowstone is on top of a Super-Volcano that is due to blow up. The elevation of the mass year after year only adds more mass to the eventual collapse that is destined to take place, and when that enormous collapse occurs, the earth will rebound/react with a violent explosion due to the 2 opposing forces of the venting and falling mass of earth. It is like trying to slam the lid on a pressure cooker - the rebound won't be nice to you.
