how would i go about getting her SSN?
My sister had her baby removed at 6 days of age. She was placed with us by DHS as legal guardians. Now, i have looked into all the legalities of claiming her on my income taxes, and found it to be true tht i could do so. However, my sister, the babies mom refuses to give me her SSN and says that she will not allow me to claim her on my income taxes. I have talked to DHS and she told me they will get the number oe way or the other, but it may take a court order to do so. Im not convinced they are gonna do this in a quick manner, and as i would like to get my taxes filed ASAP, Im looking for ideas. Can i call the SS offices and explain to them the situation in hopes they will give me the number, or issue me a new card for her? Can i file paperwork myself to obtain a court order? Like i said just looking for ideas and possibilities,

If you're worried about a long drawn-out process, file your taxes without claiming the baby. When you finally get the SSN, file an amended return. The tax benefit of claiming the baby is worth about $925, give or take.

So go ahead and file your tax return without claiming the child. You can amend the return later.
