Is the holy spirit a person or Gods power?

Please refer to scriptural evidence in your answers

Update:

PLEASE refer to scripture when answering, otherwise you are just giving your opinion :)

Update 2:

Thanks for the scriptures:

Mack - please consider this source:

The New Catholic Encyclopedia explains: “The Old Testament clearly does not envisage God’s spirit as a person . . . God’s spirit is simply God’s power.” The same source adds: “The majority of New Testament texts reveal God’s spirit as something, not someone; this is especially seen in the parallelism between the spirit and the power of God.”

Update 3:

Andy - which translation are you using? New Living Translation of King James?

Mines says - (John 15:26) When the helper arrives that I will send YOU from the Father, the spirit of the truth, which proceeds from the Father, that one will bear witness about me

Please note, no mention of "he"

Holman Christian Bible doesn't contain it either

I have just checked a Greek to English source and the word "he" is not in the original writings (source The Emphatic Diaglott: original Greek text)

I have double checked the Greek word for "he" elsewhere in this source and the word is not the same as the word translated "he" in some sources; the actual wording is "that will testify concerning me"

Update 4:

Ernest S - my translation says... “An‧a‧ni′as, why has Satan emboldened you to play false to the holy spirit and to hold back secretly some of the price of the field?

Update 5:

Please consider:

it is not unusual in the Scriptures for something that is not actually a person to be personalized or personified. Wisdom is personified in the book of Proverbs (1:20-33; 8:1-36).

Wisdom is also personified at Matthew 11:19 and Luke 7:35, where it is depicted as having both “works” and “children.” The apostle Paul personalized sin and death and also undeserved kindness as “kings.” (Ro 5:14, 17, 21; 6:12)

In a large number of cases the expression “holy spirit” appears in the original Greek without the article, thus indicating its lack of personality.—Compare Ac 6:3, 5; 7:55; 8:15, 17, 19; 9:17; 11:24; 13:9, 52; 19:2; Ro 9:1; 14:17; 15:13, 16, 19; 1Co 12:3; Heb 2:4; 6:4; 2Pe 1:21; Jude 20

Christians are spoken of as being baptized “in holy spirit.” (Ac 1:5; 11:16) Persons are urged to become “filled with spirit” instead of with wine. (Eph 5:18) So, too, persons are spoken of as being ‘filled’ with it along with such qualities as wisdom and faith (Ac 6:3, 5; 11:24) o

Update 6:

Pearl - thank you. Good use of scripture. It took me some time to get your point but I think I am too tired now to think clearly. Am off to bed - good night!

The holy spirit is God's active force. Consider:

Job 33:4 God's own spirit made me, And the Almighty's own breath proceeded to bring me to life.

There is no person involved here, it is God's own force which was used to create everything from the very beginning.

Psalms 146:4 His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; In that day his thoughts do perish.

This is what happens when you die. This spirit or active force allows you to live, the same way as electricity allows an appliance to work. Once you die, (or the appliance is unplugged), that force lives the body, (or appliance), and it no longer is able to live, (or work).

Matt 3:16 After being baptized Jesus immediately came up from the water; and, look! the heavens were opened up, and he saw descending like a dove God's spirit coming upon him.

In this instance God chose to have his holy spirit come upon Jesus in the appearance of a dove. Does this mean it was a person that came down? No, not by any means.

Notice verse 17 Look! Also, there was a voice from the heavens that said: "This is my Son, the beloved, whom I have approved."

If it was a person sent down, wouldn't God explain that, since he went to the trouble of identifying who his Son was. It would have been easy for him to clear it up for us but he didn't say anything of the kind.

As far as a few references to "he"; what you wrote is exactly true: "It is not unusual in the Scriptures for something that is not actually a person to be personalized or personified. Wisdom is personified in the book of Proverbs (1:20-33; 8:1-36). Wisdom is also personified at Matthew 11:19 and Luke 7:35, where it is depicted as having both “works” and “children.”

Proverbs 1:20 True wisdom itself keeps crying aloud in the very street. In the public squares it keeps giving forth its voice.

Luke 7:35 All the same, wisdom is proved righteous by all its children.

So, maybe this would lead others to believe wisdom is a PERSON, LOL!

Each individual member of the Trinity is a person, because each possesses a mind, emotions, and a will.

...all the elements of personhood are attributed to the Holy Spirit: mind (John 14:26; 1 Corinth 2:11), emotions (Eph 4:30), and a will (1 Corinth 12:11). Personal pronouns such as "He" and "His" are used in reference to Him: "But when HE, the Spirit of truth, comes, HE will guide you into all truth. HE will not speak on HIS own; HE will speak only what HE hears, and HE will tell you what is yet to come" (John 14:26). The Holy Spirit even used personal pronouns of Himself: "While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for ME Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them'" (Acts 13:2). Finally, the Holy Spirit engages in actions only a person can do: He searches, knows, speaks, testifies, reveals, convinces, commands, strives, moves, helps, guides, creates, recreates, sanctifies, inspires, intercedes, orders the affairs of the church, and performs miracles (see Gen 6:3; Luke 12:12, John 3:8, 16:8; Acts 8:29; Romans 8:26, 1 Corinth 2:11; Eph 4:30; 2 Peter 1:20).

... Is this enough to answer your question?

As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.

    MARANATHA! Come, Lord Jesus, COME!

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Holy Trinity.

There are lots of references to the Holy Spirit in the New Testament (for example, in the Gospel of John, the Acts of the Apostles, letters of Paul, etc.)

For a complete treatment of the topic see the links below.

    John 15:26

The Work of the Holy Spirit ] “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.

Notice here that Jesus refers the the Holy Spirit as a "he"......A power is not referred to in this way. The Holy Spirit is definitely a person.

The Holy Spirit is the first person within the godhead; the force of Creation.

The Holy Spirit overshadowed the Virgin Mary, who gave birth to Jesus.

That also made GOD both the Father & the Son as well.

The theological definition for this is the Holy Trinity.

    Three persons in one godhead.

Neither God nor Jesus Nor Holy Spirit is Actually a "person" "HIM" or He" even tho referred to as masculine gender in Bible for reference purpose. The Trinity Of course is Spirit- a force.. divine power.

  • the Holy Spirit is the only member of the God head that does not have a mortal body but the Spirit of God is Gods power and is different from the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost

God the Holy Spirit is a Person and is a member of the triune God along with God the Father and Jesus.

[Note: I use the name Yeshua for the Son of God because this is the name that the Almighty gave His Son and it means 'The LORD Saves". So every time you use the name of the Son, you are proclaiming a profound truth.]

Basically, God is composed of Spirit - He IS SPIRIT; any part of the Spirit indwelling in man is spoken of in the Bible as the Holy Spirit.

As the Bible says, “You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe - and tremble!” (James 2:19). The teaching that the Holy Spirit of God is the third person of a trinity, which can only translate as a triune or threesome godhead, is false! Don’t believe it.

What is called the Holy Spirit [of God] in Luke 12:12, is referred to in the same context of verses, as the Spirit of your Father in Matthew 10:20. Or as the Messiah said in John 4:24, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him, must worship in Spirit and in truth.”

It was the Holy Spirit that led Yeshua into the desert (Matthew 4:1), and enabled him to do all the works that he did; healing, preaching, casting out demons, etc. Yeshua himself said, “I can of myself do nothing.” in John 5:30.

Acts 10:38 “how God anointed Yeshua of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”

Unless we are baptised in the Holy Spirit of God (John 1:33), we cannot worship God in Spirit! Nor can we learn or know any of the truth of God, without the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:13). This is why we need to be born again - that is, to be reborn of (baptised in) the Spirit (John 3:5), so that by learning of and from God, we can cast off our old selves and be renewed into living spiritual and no longer physical lives.

Then we can say to each other, ‘Do you not know that you are the temple of God and the Spirit of God dwells in you? ...’ 1 Cor 3:16-17.

The LORD God, God the Father, is seeking those who worship Him in Spirit (capital ‘S’ denoting worship through His Holy Spirit - the Holy Spirit of God Himself) and in truth - for God is Spirit! (extracted from John 4:23-24.)

This is why and when Yeshua said we would be able to do as he had done - and even more!!! Unbelievable? Read John 14:12. “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to my Father.”

John 7:39 But this he [Yeshua] spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Yeshua was not yet glorified.

Yeshua had received the promise from his Father, (Acts 2:33 “Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he poured out this which you now see and hear.”) that once he had undergone his trials and crucifixion, the Father would send His Holy Spirit - and this was the same Power that empowered Yeshua (Matthew 12:28, and Acts 10:38). (Compare also Isaiah 32:15 & 44:3.)

Acts 5:31-32 “Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Saviour, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are his witnesses to these things, and also the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

It is God’s Spirit that dwells in you - this is what will empower you and as Yeshua said, “But when

they deliver you, do not worry about how or what you should say. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; for it is not you who speaks, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.” Matthew 10:19 & 20. Compare Daniel 4:18 “.... for the Spirit of the Holy God is in you.”

Romans 8:14 ‘For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons [and daughters] of God.’

‘Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.’ 1 Cor 2:10-13

The Son of God, is the Word of God.

The Holy Spirit of God is the ‘finger’ of God.

And God is..... God the Father.

    The LORD.

The Holy Spirit of God is, for want of a better way of expressing it, as much of God as a human being can touch or hold. Like a hologram, that even when smashed into tiny pieces, never loses the whole picture in each and every sliver - so the Holy Spirit of God is not a part or piece of God, but retains completeness with the whole of God.

For the LORD God is Spirit.

You cannot lie to a power, only to a Person.

But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

Neither can you tempt a power but only a person.

Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.

Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

Neither can a power hear or speak, but only a Person.

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Neither can a power separate out people and call them to a work, only a Person can do that.

As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.

    Enough said?

Or do you think it is just a power answering your question?

Edit : Yours is not a translation. The people who "translated" it couldn't understand nor speak the original languages.

Besides you have failed to address the issues put to you.

And again, am I just a force or power?

Wisdom in the Book of Proverbs is indeed Jesus Christ and not an abstact concept.

    Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;

Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

Then you obviously do not know Him if you can deny Him.
