R&P: What is R&P's opinion of this singing controversy?
I hope to be able to express why this caught my attention, but I'm more interested in hearing R&Ps views on this matter. An Indiana school district that told a black teenager to perform "The Star-Spangled Banner" in a "traditional way" after receiving complaints about her performance is drawing questions now about whether the complaints were racially motivated.

Principal Jeff Henderson said in a statement that Martinsville townsfolk complained that while the words to the anthem were the same, the tune was unrecognizable and disrespectful to current and former members of the military. I relate because while I'm known for being an inspiring speaker, it seems to rub certain people the wrong way because I'm not "serious" enough.. They said the same thing about Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye sings American National Anthem
So R&P, this brings us to the question, how do you feel about this?
Your opinions matter to me
Thanks

I don't think there was anything wrong with either~~especially the 16 year old girl. It was really close to the original and she did a good job.
Marvin just personalized it...which is OK by me.
I do lean towards racism on these two singers..which is more of a disgrace than anything done by ANY singer.
Now if you want to get into "disrespectful" performances of The National Anthem I'd much rather vote Roseanne Barr who seemingly tried her best to fck it up,and Mick Jagger who tried to *rock* it like a rolling stone. Both performances caused my ears to puke.
ps Loved the Whitney version too!

first, it's not a song i hear everyday, like many americans, but it was definitely recognizable.
second, the not-so-good folk of martinsville (how many complainants were there? 2? 24?) oviously have nothing better to do, and
third, the principal, the governors, the state education board, whoever made the decision that it needed to be sung more 'traditionally' are the biggest bunch of cowards since lily-livered yellow-bellies were invented.
it is telling that the young lady had been singing this way for a year with no problems. indeed, the video shows generous applause and warm appreciation. so, who the f*** is so special in hicksville?
the school should have given them a polite, but firm, thanks for your opinions, now get lost.
the authors of the directive to the girl are the most odious villlains of this piece.

The traditional tune sounds way better to me...why would you change it? But still, people shouldn't be over reacting like this.
Singing the national anthem in a different tune should only get this much controversy if it was for something much more important than a silly high school basketball game.

The only messed up part about this is that people are big enough idiots these days to care about the way the national anthem was sung at a high school basketball game.

Every person has their own rendition of "The Stars Spangled Banner". Just listen at the football & baseball games.
Personally I think she be able to sing.

They would hate what Jimi did.
I thought it was good, not disrespectful. Nothing wrong with it, follows the melody while improvising some parts.
They need to get some soul in their lives. Who wants the same tired monotone anthem? Shouldn't covers be your own creative perception of a song? Guitar, voice, what does it matter? It sounds good, no disrespect was intentional.
Open your minds people. e.e

Well I seen Jimi Hendrix do it and that was just guitar so I thought that was okay, but when people have the need to scream like a moron, and make a note that last 2 seconds last 20 f*ucking seconds, it may not be disrespectful if they're not trying to be, but it's terrible and annoying to the ears

She sang the Star-Spangled Banner. What's controversial about that?

That was fine & close to traditional. I've heard chicks do a lot worse than that.
Like when they do 20 vocal swells for just one note. I hate that. She didn't do any of that overdone crap.

I've heard tons of singers sing it in this style. I don't know why people are throwing their arms over their heads about this. It's not like it's a fu<king ritual with a set of rules. People in the United States are obsessed with patriotism.
