The online updates are MANDATORY. There's no way around them.

No, you just click cancel. The reason it does this is because the game is better if it runs off your hard drive instead of the disk. The graphics run smoother so it looks better, it takes half the time to load stuff. And also the PS3 has less of a chance of overheating and forcing you to turn it off. Or even breaking.

Some games require an install to play but most will require a game Install so the game can run faster
