Need advice for our first cruise....?

My husband and I (both in our late 30's) are going on the Carnival Ecstasy to Yucatan & Cozumel Mexico. We are leaving the kids home and are hoping for a romantic getaway (it departs on Valentine's Day), but I have read over and over that Carnival cruises are more for "partying". Any suggestions that you could give us for first time cruise would be greatly appreciated. We are both workaholics, so this would be our first vacation ever.

I just completed my first cruise as well. A few basics I learned: read your daily newsletter for a schedule and daily entertainment---there are often hidden gems to do beyond the nightly shows. Also, bring extra cash--the on board ATM fees are outrageous. Talk to other cruisers (and staff) for advice on ports and what to do--I found that many experienced cruisers know the best places to go on shore.

I have been on a Carnival cruise once and it did stop in Cozumel! My family and I went to Dolphin Discovery. It is amazing. You have two choices there, Swim with the dolphins (which is what we did) or just do the encountering. Of course swimming with them is more expensive, but is definately worth it. In the encounter we just saw them doing tricks while you sat on the edge and you can touch them and maybe feed them. If you swim with them you get to feed them, hold a bar and they jump over it, you get to hold onto their dorsle fin and they will pull you, and both of them will come up behind you and will push you by your feet with their nose and you will start standing up, and then fall into the water. I definately recommend it! Have fun!

You can choose to party or just lay low. There are many activities and things to do aboard the ship. Carnival is very fun and I know you will have a wonderful time.

If you go on carnival and enjoy it, expect a whole lot more from other cruiselines...
