If you just need to get the files off the disk, and your desktop has a spare SATA port available on the motherboard, you can simply connect the laptop drive to the motherboard with a SATA cable and use a spare SATA power connector from your power supply. SATA connectors are the same size on both desktop and laptop model drives (the older PATA ribbon cable had different sizes)
