My local Church of Scotland charges for its sunday service. How can this be right?

I very much doubt if it does, but I do know one or two people in Aberdeen Presbytery, so maybe if you pass on the details.
Most CofS services include a collection or offering, and usually that involves passing round baskets or bags or plates or something, but it's entirely voluntary and it would be very unusual if anyone commented in any way on you letting the plate pass by.
If Tyke means you're from Yorkshire, and you're settled in Aberdeen, there are actually quite a few of us in the NE, including at least one minister of an Aberdeen CofS congregation. Appen sithee sometime.

Matthew 10:7 - YOU received free, give free.
I have never head of this although the collection plate or similar is passed around most if not all parishioners which compels most to give something.
Donations should not be coaxed out of people; they should be given with a happy generous heart; that is why Jehovah's Witnesses have collection boxes at the back of the hall only so no one is forced to contribute but does so willingly.
Do you pay at the door or what?

Charge them for showing up.
You could ask them to show you in Scripture where ministers charged congregations for their services rendered...
Imagine the apostle Paul using this rationalization.
