Is it copyright infringement to film a movie in front of my apartment building?

If I was filming outside of my apartment building and used it for a movie and put it up on youtube without asking my landlord permission to film, is it copyright infringement and would I be arrested for that?

Unless the building has unique and artistic features you are fine. Copyright covers creative works, not "just old fashioned print (like books and newspapers)". Some, and they are very few, unique buildings *do* require permission to shoot exteriors but I wouldn't worry about a regular apartment building.

    Couple of issues:

Copyright: The copyright of architecture, under US law, does not prevent taking pictures of copyrighted buildings in public, only making duplicates of the building itself (and the plans), and only applies to buildings erected after 1990.

There may be trademark or trade dress protections of the building's appearance, if it is a recognizable commercial commodity, such as a "Hat and Boots gas station", which is/was a trademark of a roadside attraction in Seattle, if you are attempting to capitalize upon its notoriety in your film.

Finally, there are certain buildings for which security concerns may prohibit photographing or filming the building without permission, and I have heard of people having their cameras confiscated while it gets sorted out.

Just making a film with a generic building in public does not violate anybody's rights.

Copyright refers to old fashioned print (like books and newspapers). If you are public property and filming, you have that right as long as you are not blocking traffic.

Not unless your landlord has the building copyrighted.
