Do you believe sales tax is pointless?

Why do we have it? What does it go towards?

Update:

I'm specifically talking about sales tax on everything we BUY. We already have enough taxes coming out of our paychecks.

It goes to the state, to use for the services the state provides.

It goes toward running your state and local governments. It is pointless to the extent that you would prefer to not have policemen, teachers, schools, parks, snow clearing and all the other services your state and local governments provide. The option is to eliminate sales tax and raise income taxes and property taxes. At least there is a chance that some of what the state receives from sales tax is paid by people visiting or passing through your state (of course, if you travel, you pay other state's sales tax and support those people).

Of course it's not pointless. Where do you think your state gets its income?

Go to your state's official Web site and look at their budget for information on where they spend the money.

it supports the state (mostly) and local governments - if they do away with it, some other taxes will have to be increased, like income or property and some other NEW tax
