The recommended way of cleaning pearls is to wipe over regularly with a just-damp soft cloth. You can clean pearls in water however the stringing material may be damaged - particularly if it is on knotted silk. Also, pearls are organic gems and as such are soft and may be damaged by harsh abrasives, chemicals, cleaning brushes etc.
If the pearls are very dirty and the stringing material is as well, you could take them to a jewellers and ask them to clean and restring them - they will take the necklace apart, wash the pearls carefully in a suitable solution, dry them and then restringing them. This is a time consuming process and if the necklace is long it can be expensive - but its better to do this than not wear them!
The best way to care for your pearls is to wipe over the necklace with the just-damp soft cloth immediately after wearing. Store them in a jewellery box or bag where they won't get scratched by other jewellery and don't put them on until you are about to walk out the door (AFTER you've applied moisturisers, perfume etc.).

Depends if they're high grade pearls or cheap pearls , If expensive I'd best avoid doing it yourself as you do not want to damage them so I recommend a good quality jeweller.
