Rap & Hip Hop: I officially came up with reasoning behind something?
I often wondered about why a lot of people on here hate Def Jux/Anticon/Rhymesayers music, sometimes proclaiming the word "underground" almost as a new term for "whack". I officially took a look into their eyes though.
First of all, I was bored when I made this, a few drinks can do that to a man. So here we go:
The first habit I noticed in these people is they listen to generic rap, name brand artist. They proclaim Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt as the two best hip hop albums of all time, and say that 36 Chambers is the Magna Carta of rap (when generally the album was a technical mess, that was somehow dope). First of all, I also noticed a simi-racist tent in there comments on the labels as calling them "white boy emo rap" labels when they have great artist like MURS, Mr. Lif, etc... I believe they were mainly commenting on Slug, and Cage. I just wanted to say this though... how are these exactly "emo"?

Yeah, they've made some sad songs too but they also made some songs that you would hear rappers like Kanye West (Women Tonight) rap or something so grimy (Night Hawks) that Ol' Dirty Bastard would rap.
Who's to say these people aren't hip hop? Or are whack? My conclusio on a lot of this is to get your head out of either:
A. 1996, I mean seriously instead of whining about what's not hip hop whine about something I'll laugh about (I.E. your penis size or the end of the world)
B. Mainstream rap, if you think Lil' Wayne's beats are great and Lil' B is not that bad, then GTFO.
Also, do not go on this rant about how you like underground rappers if they're a present day reminisce of Jay-Z, Black Thought, etc... we all know you only like them because they remind you of the 90s.
In all honesty, your parents probably let you watch the same movies on repeat and sadly it mentally created you to love repetitive things (I.E. the radio playing the same thing over and over, or you listening to the same album over and over).
I would continue on but I really just want to say please allow hip hop to progress, we can't stay in the era of rapping about rapping or mafioso rap forever.
Soulstice, watch the section from time to time you'll see a lot of users who seem to have this 90s elitist state of mind.
36 Chambers isn't whack. It's dope, the albums layout and sound overall though was a mess. It's like abstract art; beautiful but while it was being created it was probably just slung around a lot. Or that's how I feel about it.
Missy, this is probably just a big generalization about this section. I notice this on amazon a bit too, but this section fits into this a lot.
Also, I really don't hate anything that's good in someway. I mean Lil' B has some decent beats, his voice and lyrics are annoying though. Lil' Wayne has good lyrics and somewhat okay beats. Jay-Z is nice but is not a God, Nas is great but he's really monotone with his discography.

I may come off as a douchebag by saying this, but oh well.
I have no problem with everybody having their own opinion. I like it, actually. We need variety in life, and in music. But just because it's somebody's opinion, doesn't mean it's true. The fact is, there are only a handful of people in this section who have a good taste in hip-hop, and music in general. The rest are shallow hypocrites who "listen to what sounds good", while calling Lil' B dope at the same time. (News flash; he has no flow, his lyrics are corny and unfunny, he shows major signs of being a homo, and he associates himself with people like Soulja Boy..)
Sage Francis and Mr. Lif? They ARE dope. It's a fact, not an opinion. They are lyrically crazy, which right away makes them good. The lines Sage Francis spits, the concepts Mr. Lif comes out with, Slug's consistency, El-P's ahead-of-his-time production.. That all makes something or someone DOPE. There is no arguing it.
And this is mostly directed at the people who bash these particular labels, or just underground in general because they don't like it (or even because it isn't "relevant"..)... your opinion doesn't matter people!

the whole "emo white rap" i believe is just a joke and really aren't what people are saying
"who's to say these people are wack"
the listener is, its all opinion, but still if I find someone wack then I have all the right to say so.
that said some of these rappers people post here are wack, I mean first thing about music is it is meant to appeal to your ear, if you hear somebody with a strong southern accent and overly complex wording, then its not going to appeal to me and many others. No one wants to listen to someone who is boring, thats plain and simple
but also no one hear is what I'd call stuck in "1996," at least not the regs, because many think 00's were better or they think hip hop is in a good place.
I do agree mafioso rap has run its course its time for new things, but mafioso rap was good for its time.
you also contridicted yourself you say who are you to call anything wack and then talk down on the people who think "Lil Wayne's beats are great and Lil' B is not that bad," when Lil' B does have some decent music, in my eyes. Lil Wayne isn't bad and has dropped some decent stuff.

I've honestly just never gotten into those labels. I've listened to a bunch of Atmosphere, some MURS (who is incredibly inconsistent), and Mr Lif (Not a fan of the production on his albums). They're good, but I could see why people either don't like them, or don't like them enough to look into the rest of the label. A lot of the stuff I've heard from those labels have been fairly experimental or abstract, which is fine, just not for everybody.

I've got to agree with most of what Pac Libs said.
Some criticisms towards artists can be ignorant and certain dispositions towards the arts can definitely hault the progress and evolution of certain styles and creativity, but at the end of the day...its all opinion, and to attack those who attack artists you like by grouping them into a category of Lil Wayne fans is just carrying out the beauty of music in that its art...everyone gets a say, no matter of unjustified or contradictory you think that opinion is.
In my opinion, Illmatic is better than anything Rhymesayers and Def Jux has ever put out. Is my head stuck in the 90's? Maybe, but overall, its stuck in what I think is good music, just like you.
The "mainstream rap" argument doesn't really work because it doesn't really ever stop. I could name MC's that have much less backing that Rhymesayer artists and could tell you to do the same thing you're telling the "mainstream" fans to do.
I look at some of your favorite artists like Sage Francis and personally think they're wack. I'll argue about why Eminem beats Sage Francis all day...but at the end of the day, its all taste and if someone's taste is the 90's or Lil Wayne...so be it.

Madlib needs best answer.
I'm one of the most open-minded people I know. In and out of music, especially Hip-Hop. I've listened to "emo" rappers, Lil B talking about f*cking b*tches, Brotha Lynch talking about killing and eating people. Can I relate to all of the stuff I listen to? No. But do I find the listening experience much better when hearing someone rap about something I've been through? Of course.
It's all tastes, I respect all tastes. I have at least one or two artists in common with EVERYONE who loves Hip-Hop.

...What it really comes down to is Image...people dont want to be seen as a certain type of person, its pathetic, but people have this weird thing about NEEDING to fit into a certain stereotype..and then theres people who try to NOT be in stereotypes...who just end up f*cking themselves over, because they fall into a stereotype too....and im not going to point fingers, but there's a group of kids in this section who feed off each others favorite artist and they all roll with it...i think they like wack artist just to prove a point...it comes off as ignorant. There are always the people who actually do like artist that are considered wack by some, and i have more respect for them than i do with people who say they like them to prove points, or come off as non underground heads...people just care too much about what each other think..if you havnt noticed..alot of people who answered this took it personally, and defended themselves telling what they liked and what they didn't...IMAGE. and image can change peoples opinions GREATLY...i got a little offtrack there -_- but peoples mindstates can change in minuets...its ridiculous, they just have a certain image in there head of what music they think real and not, and they wont let anything get past it.

I'm kinda confused as whether this is just supposed to be a big azz generalization about people that don't happen to like the same artists as you..I mean they could just not like the artists and their music. It doesn't really have to be more complex than that, and their are probably alot of people that don't like any of those labels that don't fit into those stereotypes.

People have opinions..... I don't think it needs to be investigated any further than that detective. A lot of you guys on here get your wittle feelings huwt if somebody doesn't like the same artist as you, it's hilarious.
I officially came up with reasoning behind something as well............
You're all communists.

6 foot 7 foot was dope....
and since i agree with most of this, ima star
EDIT: Hold up, did you just say 36 Chambers was wack?!? I skipped over that somehow but how does someone not like 36 Chambers?
oh thank god, and thats a dope description of the album itself

I am guilty of this, but not for the reasons you listed. I'll call an underground rapper irrelevant or a lame backpacker if they rap about stuff that I think is lame or irrelevant. I understand a lot of regs like this kind of music because they don't relate to "hood raps" so they think "Oh that's not reality for me, therefore it's wack!" but they don't realize that it is a reality for a lot of people. I live on the south side of Chicago and people around here aren't listening to Sage Francis because, just like Project Pat or Gucci Mane may be irrelevant to you, Sage Francis is irrelevant to people who live here. But that doesn't mean they listen to Lil Wayne and Flo-Rida just because they are "stuck on mainstream". They might as well make another genre called "street" because cats I know listen to guys with the "mainstream sound" who aren't always well known. I'll listen to someone like MF DOOM though, because he's a funny guy. He'll drop some references that I recognize and I can enjoy what he's talking about. If he started rapping about his "hard life" and his relationships like Cage does, I wouldn't bother with him anymore, and no one I know in real life would either. You gotta realize that not everyone is in the same situation as you. I'm not trying to be an a*s but I would assume you are white, mid 20's and live in the suburbs somewhere if you listen to a ton of underground guys I've never heard of. That's not a bad thing, those people just relate more to that kind of music. But you can't expect guys growing up in inner cities, who actually witness drugs being sold and people being shot on a daily basis to like the same stuff you do because you think it's superior in some way. They hear a verse about people getting shot or guys selling dope and they say "That's true sh*t" the same way someone from the suburbs might hear a song about a tough relationship or whatever suburban kids are worrying about and say "This guy raps about life".
I'm not saying there aren't people who do what you said, there's a ton of people on here who say "fukc da mainstream 90's da best" or "fukc dat backpacker wayne n drake da best", there is just another side that you should know about before you assume stuff like this.
Lol but the only reason I call them lame backpackers is to piss off MQ and Trylemma. i like seeing them get mad. I actually like a lot of underground guys, I just find it hilarious when MQ or Trylemma types up paragraph after paragraph about why artists they like are more relevant when they don't know anything about how the other half is living.
You know what I'm sayin', yo?
