Are English Subjects permitted to work in the Republic of Ireland?

And has anyone here moved to Ireland? How did you find the experience?

Sure, anyone who is a citizen of one of the 27 member countries of the European Union (EU) can pretty much work anywhere in the EU. It has created a bit of a problem in some places with somewhat uneducated people from weaker economic countries flooding booming economies like UK and (previously) Ireland. But the people that complain about this are the same ones who would prefer not to have to empty dustbins or clean toilets for a living...

Yes of course English people can work in Ireland, there are hundreds of thousands of English people living and working in Ireland. Anyone from within the EU can work here that is if they can actually find a job, jobs are pretty rare these days.

Me, my partner and 2 kids moved over from England in 2004 to live in Co.Cork. I found the experience great, everyone is really friendly, my kids settled in at the local school and I love the countryside and the peace and quiet. The rain gets me down that is the only problem. It does rain a hell of a lot.

I'm self employed running a B&B so its tough going at the moment because nobody has any money to go on holiday. Luckily a local forestry company has been sending 1 or 2 workmen to stay every week since November which has helped pay a few bills. My partner is an EC1 lorry driver/heavy plant machine driver with 30 years experience. He has had various jobs driving lorries in Ireland and heavy plant machines on building sites. He used to drive lorries exporting cattle to Spain and Italy and earned great money. That business has all gone now pretty much.

He was made redundant in Nov 2009 and hasn't worked since so he relies on the dole. He's in his late 50s and finding it hard to find a new job. We live in a really rural place and there are just no jobs to be had. The construction industry has been hit particularly hard by the recession, he worked for agencies in Cork on various building sites but that has all gone now.

If you are thinking of moving over to Ireland I would think again, many of our young people are emigrating to Canada, New Zealand and Australia. If we were younger and weren't saddled with a house we cannot sell we'd probably go too, there are lots of construction jobs in Australia for qualified people.

What could stop you coming here! There are loads of Irish in the UK, loads of British in Ireland.

I can't see you getting any major culture shock coming here, as both countries share some similar traditions.

As for why you're coming to Ireland now of all times is beyond me.
