They're both part of the menstrual cycle, ovulation triggers off menstruation.

During the menstrual cycle the Pituitary Gland in the brain releases Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) to tell the woman's ovaries to produce eggs, as the eggs grow they produce Estrogen, when high enough this tells the Pituitary Gland to stop releasing FSH and start releasing Luteinizing Hormone (LH) instead, this causes ovulation. The area where the egg broke from starts releasing Progesterone and Estrogen which causes the woman's uterus walls to plump up, if she doesn't get pregnant the Progesterone stops being released causing menstruation. The cycle starts again.

Ovulation is the period when the female reproductive organ or matrix forms the woman's egg or ova which is ready for fertilization by a male sperm. If the sexual contact is done and consummated, the egg or ova is fertilized and the egg cell develops into a human body that becomes a child.

In ovulation, the body prepares the womb with blood cells that will support the child to be formed after fertilization. After 28 days, if the sexual contact and fertilization is not consummated, the process called menstruation occurs. The blood that has formed around the matrix becomes stale and the blood cells detach from the matrix and goes out of the vagina through menstruation. Another 28-day cycle begins to prepare the womb for another possible contact and fertilization. If there is no contact again the process and cycle is repeated.

Welp,it's a complex process, my friend. As I understand. When a woman is not pregnant, she builds up a lining in her vagina to hold an egg, and potentially nourish a baby. Every month when the body realizes she isn't pregnant, the lining is shed (thus the blood) along with an old egg. Then, a few days after the period ends, ovulation occurs when a new egg comes out of the fallopian tubes and descends into the cervix, hoping to be fertilized, eventually is disappointed, then hurls itself at a tampon in a bloody suicidal fit of rage.

When an egg is penetrated by sperm and thus fertilization occurs, a woman is pregnant and then I don't know what the **** happens after that.

    The miracle of life!

EDIT: According to all of our answers, no woman really knows how their body works. Including me, because I bet at least one fact here is wrong. Close enough. I tried.

    Basically this:

when ovulating, an egg gets released and makes its way to the uterus and attaches to the lining. If it has not been fertilized the uterine lining will shed, this is the blood & tissue that comes out each month. Menstruation.

    Hope that answers your question.

Ovulation is when one of a woman's eggs matures and passes from her ovary to her fallopian tube and is ready for sperm to invade.

Menstruation is when a woman's egg isn't fertilized in time, and her body sheds the uterine lining (blood)
