weaning from breastfeeding?

my daughter is 1year and 4months old. i'm going out of the country for two weeks this coming March. I would like to gently wean her off breastfeeding. my older child had to be weaned cold turkey because i had bleeding episodes during pregnancy with the second child. i don't want to go through that agony again. Baby is now nursing only twice a day right before the morning and afternoon nap. i try to be out of sight (locked up in my home office) during meal time because she would rather nurse than eat. But ever since i started this twice-a-day nursing routine, it seems she wants to nurse more at night. i just noticed the other night that she kept her mouth on (without really feeding) for close to 2hrs! [i never noticed before because i fall asleep a few seconds after she latches on.] i've also tried to let her sleep with gramma, but she raises a huge ruckus and screams for me when gramma won't give her to me to nurse (sometimes it's just an hour after she fell asleep so we know she's not hungry).

questions

1. How do I start training her to stop nursing during the day and then at night?

2. if she does stop nursing at night, how sure am i that she's not hungry / starving? [she doesn't eat big meals]

Choose the most valuable seven hours of sleep for yourselves. I personally prefer 11p.m. through 6 a.m. but you might have a slightly different idea.

I try to do this in three- and four-night intervals. baby will protest, you will have to deal with it!! If your baby learns that crying, squirming and fussing (euphemisms, let’s just say “crying” . . . sorry) for an hour will get him fed you will set yourself back quite a bit. This is the best program I have seen but it’s far from easy. And now, to say it again, I really like what you’ve been doing. Cuddling, nursing, hugging through the night. Don’t change this with my program or any other if you’re happy doing what you’re doing...

At any time before 11 p.m. (including 10:58) nurse to sleep, cuddle and nurse when he wakes up and nurse her back to sleep, but stop offering nursing to sleep as the solution to waking after 11 p.m.. Instead…..

When your baby awakens at midnight or any other time after 11 p.m., hug & nurse for a short time but don't let her fall asleep on the breast and put her down awake. Rub and pat and cuddle a little until she falls asleep but don’t put her back on the breast....she will be angry, not scared, but mad!

it will be hard but be consistent, if she falls asleep you can nurse again, but once she sleeps through the first one you can move on to the next time and so on, each time can take three days or up to 7 days the key is being consistent!

she will have to be offered whole milk 3 or 4 times a day, she should drink between 16-24 ounces, it is OK if she only eats 3 or 4 bites, toddlers don't eat much just offer healthy foods whole grains and fresh fruit and vegetables
