Which heats better: gas fireplace or gas heat Stove?
We will be heating a room approximately 16 x 28. We have propane gas.
Not a cookstove but the self standing direct vented type of heating stove.

There really isn't much difference. If you have either type of appliance with the same btu rating you will get basically the same result. The only drawbacks to the stove type are they take up more room space and small kids can burn little fingers on them easier.
EIther way, get a fan kit for the appliance to help with the air circulation.

A stove is made to cook, a gas fireplace to heat. So I would recommend the fireplace. Why? Gas stoves should really have some sort of vent mechanism with them to remove carbon monoxide, but if you vent them you'll lose heat. So, its safer to use a gas fireplace as that is what it is designed to do, without asphyxiating you in your sleep.

Heat pumps don't work very well if the temperature drops below 32F. They're great in the southern climates, though. I have no experience with wood stoves or gas fireplaces.

Most of the vent free gas log fake fire places, or real F/P's with gas logs put out 25 - 30,000 Batu's or more & are more suitable for a large family room. A stove with all burners on will probably put out more BTU's.
