how to section and password protect my hard drive?

Is it possible to section my laptops hard drive and password protect part of it?

I've tried in the past to use truecrypt but found it too difficult to follow.

When I first got my laptop it had a sectioned drive for the backup. After backing it up onto dvd's this seemed to dissapear?

    Yes. Truecrypt or Bestcrypt etc. can encrypt partition or containers

    Alternatively you can P/W protect your whole drive by going into the BIOS and setting a master HDD password, that way if someone steals it, and puts it in another computer, it will be unusable without the password..
