what should i take w/ me 2 my 1st meeting with divorce atty?

I want to get this over with in a few visits to the attorney as possible....what information or paperwork do I need to gather and bring with me?thx.

    You should ask him. Usually the first meeting is one where you tell him or her about your situation and what you're looking for in terms of settlement. It's a meeting where you get advice. I don't know if you know this but in some states there are do-it-yourself divorces. One of my clients downloaded the paperwork from the internet and filed the divorce in a matter of a week or two and it was VERY inexpensive. She didn't even use an attorney. But if you have a lot of property or if one of you wants a divorce while the other is fighting it - you probably want legal counsel and it might take longer. On the other hand - if there is conflict about who gets what, including money - divorce mediation can expedite matters and it's less expensive too.

    One thing you might want to take is a list of assets and documents verifying these (houses, cars, checking and savings accounts, your latest income tax documents) and a list of settlement items you want and your proposal for anything related to custody and visitation arrangements.
