Socialism and Health Insurance Question.?

I hear a lot of talk about socialism on here, and how the healthcare reform bill is "leading us into Socialism"

My Question is: How is the concept of insurance any different than Socialism? I mean the whole concept of insurance is that the strong pay for the weak. Those that stay well pay for the care of those that are weaker, less wise, or just plain unlucky.

If this is true, why are we not rebelling against insurance in general? After all, it is socialism. Isnt it.

Update:

OK Jimmy. So your saying that the concept of Insurance is not socialist. The concept of the strong or more fortunate paying the expenses of the weak or less fortunate doesnt resemble socialism unless you are forced to purchase the insurance. Interesting. I'm all for dropping the personal mandate BTW, and adding a public option. Republicans are trying to repeal the law based on something that was their Idea!

The primary issue I have with the "Health Care Reform Act" is it really does not contain any meaningful reforms, it just requires people to buy insurance while business continues as usual.

Socialism is anything that is run democratically it can be run democratically by the community as a whole, the workers or the consumers. It is socialism but not for the reason you point out. Just because an economy has one aspect of socialism doesn't make it socialist the economy of the USA already has various socialist aspects and anyway socialism isn't necessarily bad. There are countries such as Singapore, Taiwan and the Seychelles that have been controlled by socialist parties for their entire history and they have strong economies and high standards of living.

No, the current concept of insurance is to give money to the insurance companies, who will drop you the moment you get seriously ill & need actual coverage, thus reaping the profits from all the money you have paid them.

It's called the road to socialism because the bill, in essence, forces the insurance companies to actually take care of you when you're seriously ill. Like they have promised to, thus limiting their profits, by saving people's lives.

All in all, the socialist argument is as bunk as the fake death panels.

We have private insurance and we have govt healthcare paid for through taxing the private sector so it would be a ridiculous thought to refer to it as in any way socialist. As for being on the road to socialism, its just fear tactics.

Source(s): @Saxon, to state socialism is another word for democracy is quite ignorant and Im not sure how you can make that claim.

Well, that is a good point. However, private insurance is not like that. You see, one of the key things about socialist is forced redistribution of wealth. People who buy private insurance are voluntarily buying it. However, the health care bill forces people to buy health insurance, that is very socialistic.

Also, a free market would not work this way. Insurance premiums tend to be higher for people who are less healthy, as they should be. This means that the unhealthy are paying for their increased risk...
