15,000+ Windows Updates?

I'm the "IT" person for our house and struggling to keep our computer alive. We have Windows 7 and an expired trial copy of Windows 2010, but running XP. Since I've let a couple careless family members use the computer, weird things have happened. The other night, one of them got hysterical and I came in to see the computer saying "Please Wait while 15,471 Updates Download"!!!

I've never seen anything like this before. I keep a close watch on things or try to, and have Norton Internet Security, Windows Defender, CCleaner, Glary Utilities. I defrag regularly and update my antivirus/antispyware almost every day. While surfing with Firefox, I also employ Request Policy, NoScript, & Ghostery, along with Adblock Plus.

Can anybody tell me WHAT the hell is happening here and why? The day after this, as I tried to run some diagnostics, I got messages that first, Word wasn't "responding", then Windows and then the Computer itself! I'm out of my league...

Update:

Thanks! I'm pretty sure SOMETHING's running in there, as a disk I was just copying some files to is now showing as "corrupted and unreadable"! I did have Norton pick up a keylogger on a Word file on an older flash drive, but I'd installed it (the keylogger) myself (then uninstalled it) - on a different computer. Could that be it?

Thanks for reminding me about the name-changing trick. I'd read about it and forgotten it. Will definitely try it.

I suspect that message was not from Microsoft Updates. It tends to auto-run at 3:00 AM, not during normal working hours. And 15,471 updates IS a ridiculous number.

So that implies that something got past your defenses (which look pretty good). Anybody use a flash drive that may have become infected from another machine?

Try booting into Safe Mode With Networking. (See below for details.) That sometimes keeps malware from protecting itself. Run scans from there.

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

To get into Safe Mode with Networking:

    1. Log out and reboot your machine.

    2. When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.

    3. Select Safe Mode with Networking from the resulting menu.

    4. Login. If the malware has changed your password, try logging in as Administrator. By default, Administrator has no password.

    5. The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different.

    6. When you're finished doing what you need to do, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

Another trick that may enable anti-malware and/or its installer program to sneak past the malware is to change the name of the anti-malware program itself. The names of the files and their locations differ between anti-malware programs, but the procedure is always the same:

    1. In Windows Explorer, find the folder with the anti-malware.

    2. Change the name of the program (it always ends with a .exe) to virtually anything else, but keep the “.exe” part.

    3. Run that.

    Good luck.
