Years ago we bought a house with wooden beams in the living room. The beams were each stained
a different color. The ceiling, kotty pine, was stained a dark blue green as were the walls. We sanded the knotty pine walls but couldn't manage the ceiling. We got a paint that was made to give the look of raw wood and then added a stain of the desired color. It turned out very well. Go to a good paint store and ask if they can help.

I like the 1st answer you got, but I would change the hardware as well to give it a look that you want, and not what was given to you with the apartment.
