I have a 1997 Volvo 850 GLT shifter lockout overide problem?

I am having to use the over-ride button to get the car out of park every time. I read that the shifter micro-switch might be the problem. Has anyone replaced this part? Is it a difficult job? I am okay with doing major work (brakes, heads, water pumps, clutches, etc) but the delicate stuff is something I would rather leave to a professional. Let me know if you think this is something I should attempt on my own or not. Thanks

the micro switch repair kit is a little tedious to install, requiring patience and a soft touch.

the first one i was over the allotted time after that they became pretty routine.

expect to spend 1.5-2 hrs. for first time.

note if soda or coffee has been repeatedly spilled into the console /shifter area expect the longer time for proper clean up [i have fixed numerous volvo shifters without parts just by cleaning out the sticky goo that has accumulated] if you find the area clean then yes most likely you will need the micro-switch.

    good luck

First check to see if your brake lights are working properly.

If not I would check your brake circuit fuse, and your brake light switch.

The brake electrical system is tied in with the shift-lock.
