    While I studied linguistics (that was long, long back) the relation between Sanskrit and Indo Germanic languages was a topic. Though I am not an expert in Telugu, I can say that Telugu is a good mixture of Sanskrit and Prakrit. And Sanskrit comes under Indo Germanic family of Languages or Indo Aryan Family.

    The words from Indo Aryan family have developed with a definite pattern. Examples:

    "p" became "f" and "th" became "d" ...

    pita - father -> 'p' became 'f' and "t" "d"

    mata - mother -> 't' became 'd'

    bratha - brother - 'bh' became 'b'

    There are plenty of patterns like these. Probably you can take a plunge into linguistics.
