Age to posses a handgun in Texas?

The law says you have to be 21 to purchase and conceal a handgun in Texas. However, if you are on private property, you can posses one if you are 18 or older (ex. father give it to you). If you were to go to a shooting range and have the gun in the trunk of your car, is this a violation of the law?

    Under state law:

    You must be 21 or older to get a concealed handgun license.

    http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/GV/htm/...

    GOVERNMENT CODE

    Sec. 411.172. ELIGIBILITY. (a) A person is eligible for a license to carry a concealed handgun if the person:

    (1) is a legal resident of this state for the six-month period preceding the date of application under this subchapter or is otherwise eligible for a license under Section 411.173(a);

    (2) is at least 21 years of age;

    There is no age limit on purchasing a handgun, the only law is that it is illegal to sell, give, loan, etc.. a firearm to someone under 18 (except for a parent).

    http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/PE/htm/...

    Sec. 46.06. UNLAWFUL TRANSFER OF CERTAIN WEAPONS. (a) A person commits an offense if the person:

    (2) intentionally or knowingly sells, rents, leases, or gives or offers to sell, rent, lease, or give to any child younger than 18 years any firearm, club, or illegal knife;

    You can carry a handgun in your vehicle on or about your person, without a license if you meet the "requirements", there is no age limit (although I wouldn't if you are under 18).

    The requirements are:

    1 the handgun must be concealed

    2 can not be enguaged in any criminal activity other than class c traffic

    3 legally able to own the firearm (and yes a felon can own a firearm under Texas and federal law, but it is illegal for a felon to have a firearm outside of his place of residence)

    4 can not be a member of a street gang

    5 must be your car or a car under your control

    http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/PE/htm/...

    Federal Law:

    It is not illegal for someone under 21 to purchase a firearm. LICENSED dealers can not sell a handgun to someone under 21. For individuals there is no federal law about age and selling of a firearm.

    TITLE 18 PART I CHAPTER 44 § 922

    (b) It shall be unlawful for any licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to sell or deliver—

    (1) any firearm or ammunition to any individual who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe is less than eighteen years of age, and, if the firearm, or ammunition is other than a shotgun or rifle, or ammunition for a shotgun or rifle, to any individual who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe is less than twenty-one years of age;

    Also in this section it states:

    (d) It shall be unlawful for any person to sell or otherwise dispose of any firearm or ammunition to any person knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that such person—

    .....And it lists people no one can sell a firearm to, but nothing about age.

    So to sum up if you meet the requirements to allow you to carry a handgun on or about your person without a chl license then you can carry it in your glove box or under the seat or anywhere you want (concealed of course).

    If not you just have to NOT have it on or about your person, so the trunk is ok.

    If you are a convicted felon then you can not have it anywhere other than you home (assuming you have waited 5 years after your punishment is finished).

    No.

    The federal law says you have to be 18 to purchase a handgun from a FFL dealer. The only thing it says about private purchases is that you must be at least 18.

    The private sell of handguns is determined by the state. In Texas, you can legally buy a handgun from a private individual when you are 18.

    You can keep the gun in your car and carry it anywhere not prohibited by law (you can't take it on a school campus or something like that).

    Ask this again in the Hunting section if you want more answers. The gun guys over there stay up to date on gun laws.

    it relatively is a touch weird and wonderful to me that 18 3 hundred and sixty 5 days olds in Texas might own handguns, yet will possibly no longer purchase them. At any fee, you have been given stable advice (with one exception). in spite of if it relatively is criminal so which you will possess the handgun, it relatively is criminal so which you will conceal it on your vehicle. it relatively is relatively helpful to maintain a written word out of your father to the consequence that he offered the gun for you and transferred it to you as your sources interior the form an officer ever annoying circumstances you concerning to the legality of the handgun. once you're going out to the club with the objective of eating alcohol, circulate away your handgun at residing house. certainly, in case you need to eat alcohol circulate away the vehicle at residing house. there is not any criminal decrease for sub 21 3 hundred and sixty 5 days olds and having a gun interior the vehicle will compound your issues in an significant way.
