It isn't. Although from time to time, applied to one specific faith or another, it may appear that way to you, apparently!

You presumably have no problem understanding that Apollo isn't real, or Baal, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster, Shiva, Devi, Vishnu or Odin, Frigg, Thor, Balder and Tyr? Why would you think that YOUR particular chosen "Imaginary Sky Daddy" is any more real? You are already an atheist in regards to all the others I mention!

Atheism is the normative state, the state you were born into....you had to be cajoled into believing whatever supernatural claptrap it is you now adhere to!

Do you mean :Why will atheism always be an anomaly in any society or culture?"

If so, I think this is a biased and inflammatory question which will only give you answer you like.

Why not ask a more open question like:

"What do you think of Atheism?" or "Is atheism an anomaly?" That way, you might get people of atheistic stripes to answer your question instead of getting atheism-bashers to agree with you!Personally, I have found historically, that ruling people start out using religion to control the ignorant masses and as people get more educated and more democratic, they need gods and goddesses less and less and can control themselves with will and enthusiasm without them.

Atheists are anomalies in cultures in which a ruling elite force the masses to do their bidding. They use the fear of gods to coerce people. In freer, more educated and well-funded cultures, like "The Netherlands" the religious actually become the minority. Also, in communist and some other countries, atheists are the majority and not an anomaly at all. Billions of people do NOT need your missionaries. Mind your own *&^% busness!.

In the USA, people are taught to believe in a variety of different things under the heading "Christianity" but most believe in a personal god who answers prayers and causes good things to happen to believers-even against the laws of nature. I think that is very convenient and not at all likely. I won't ever believe a human Jewish virgin teenager had a baby who was a god I could care about or who would do what I wanted him to do for me. Seems silly to suggest such a thing.

I have been an atheist all my life, and am also "spiritual," so I don't fit in your narrow view.

I suggest you do a little research before your mind slams shut for good.

In Vietnam, atheism/agnosticism are 81% prevalent. That's not really an anomaly in their society...

Appeals to popularity are generally fallacious, and such poor grammar is generally the mark of a poe.

Because few people worldwide are well educated. Furthermore, looking back in history, it was the only answer as to how things might have come to be. Its the same reason some people thought the moon was a god.

    So was Christianity...

    at one time... your point?

Atheism is growing, and we don't need missionaries... why do you? Your god not that self evident, huh?

Sorry, but atheists/agnostics/non-belief now make up 1.1 billion of the Earth's population, and growing.

    That's not an anomaly.

Maybe you live a sheltered life where people tell you everyone's a Christian or whatever?

Because there will always be those who fall to the god of the gaps, and create imaginary deities out of fear of the unknown.
