My boyfriend is bipolar and has anger issues what kind of meds would be best?

We're going to the doctor in a couple day but I am just trying to do some research about this before hand. He can't control his emotions very well at all and fixates, even makes things up in his head. Little things seem to be big issues, he probably needs councelling in addition to meds but I was wondering if anyone has any advice from personal experience in a simiar situation? concerned about side effects of meds too...

He sounds like someone who is already on medications. Its most always prescription medications that cause these symptoms.

Even medications to get people to quit smoking have side effects that can cause this, and suicidal tendencies.

Putting him on medications is only going to make things worse, not better.

Check the side effects of any medications he is currently taking. If you don't have the list that came with the medications, go to any local pharmacy and ask the pharmacist.

If he is taking anything that can effect him the way he is, then have him stop taking all those medications and he will eventually return to normal.

Also, see if he is taking any sodas or food products that contain ASPARTAME or SUCRALOSE (not sucrose, note spelling) and have him avoid taking those as well.

The worst thing you can do is put him on some sort of "anti-depressant" or mood altering medication. That will just add to the problem and will give him the uncontrollable urge to commit suicide as so many have done on these harmful "medications".

Everyone's brain chemistry is different. I may be bipolar, but I can't recommend specific meds to other people because other people have different brain chemistry. What works for me may be terrible in someone else.

However, it sounds to me like he would most likely benefit from a mood stabilizer of some sort. Like I said, can't recommend a specific drug. Yes, some of them have nasty side effects, but most people don't get these side effects. I got the short end of the stick with a lot of the ones I've been on. But just because I had problems with some of them doesn't mean that your BF will.

I think the most common side effect of mood stabilizers is weight gain. But if your BF is being helped by the mood stablizer, then he'll have more motivation to keep that weight off because he'll care more about his physical health when he's mentally in a good place. Take me as an example of being helped enough by the mood stabilizers to have the motivation to work against their side effects. My mood stablizers have caused slow but massive weight gain (100 pounds over eight years), but I'm motivated to get rid of at least 50 pounds of it, maybe all of it, over the next few years because the mood stabilizers have helped me care about my physical health more.

Well, the medicine of choice, lithium, is always usually good for the lows and highs (particularly the highs) in bipolar.

If he is showing any signs of delusional or psychotic behaviour it might also be good to put him on an anti-psychotic like Seroquel or Olanzapine.

i suffer from anger issues as well as bipolar. there are many excellent medicines out there to treat it but i am not qualified to even start to tell you what medicines would work well for him. that is up to his doctor. just trust that his doctor knows what he is doing. and yes talk therapy can help with both problems. i see a psychologist on a regular basis for my anger issues and he has been a great help to me so after talking to his doctor ask for a recommendation for a psychologist for talk therapy in dealing with not only his anger issues but in also dealing with every day problems.
