Puppy not so interested in food anymore.?

Our little Shih Tzu is 5 1/2 months old, and 9 pounds. He's wonderful and healthy (although he was a very sick puppy when we first got him).

He's never had trouble eating, and he just would devour his kibble. We feed him Royal Canin Puppy chow at the moment, since that's what he was started on.

In the last two weeks, he's started eating less and less. Sometimes his breakfast will be left in the dish until the next day. He will slowly pick at it through out the day, but not large amounts. He only gets a cup of food a day!.

He's interested in his cheerio's though. He's active. He's eliminating normally,

but I want to know if it's normal for a puppy who is normally food motivated to go through a stage like this?

Should I be changing his food again to something he might be more interested in? Or does he just have to suck it up and eat what he gets?

He's going to the vet tomorrow for a check up... so we'll be asking questions about this, but I'd just like to hear if anyone else has had issues like this.

He also has quite some problems with his teeth, as they are not developing at the rate they should be for a puppy his age. He barely had teeth until he turned 5 months old... The vet wasn't too concerned about it because of his breed, and the fact that he was eating normally, and gaining weight, but I'm wondering if this could be starting to affect him.

Poor Toby!

Update:

If he's not eating, and isn't interested, I don't really think that picking up the food is going to make much of a difference to him since he's not paying attention to the bowl. It's almost like he forgets it's there any way.

Look in his mouth he may be teething. Just keep feeding him and after 15 minutes of putting his food down pick it up til his next meal so that he will learn to eat.

my aunts dog had that same problem

she gets tired of a certain food

so I always buy HALO dog food

I switch between salmon and chicken

I currently have 2 Shih Tzu Maltese and have had 2 others.

I did have a problem with their feeding as they just were not interested just the same as yours.

Turned out that it was the food I was giving them because as soon as I changed they looked forward to feeding time!

Not a good idea to just let him suck it up as it is very important that puppies get proper food regularly for ensuring their growing bodies get all the proper essentials during their growth period.

All the help you want will be on a website that goes into puppy feeding as well as adult dogs it is called dog-food-aid .com and gives puppy food options and tells how to switch foods.

I think your vet is probably right and not to worry too much about teeth right now.

Get into the right food and I am sure, just like me, your problems will disappear!

I am guessing it is his teeth. He should be right at the end of getting all his adult teeth, but if he has problems as you say eating dry food could be uncomfortable for him. Have you tried softening his food in water? I do this for my puppies if they go off their food when they start loosing their puppy teeth and their adult teeth breaks through, it works like a charm.

Do take him to the vet to get his teeth checked, though

It could be that his teeth are bothering him when he eats. Or he might not like his food. My pup would only pick at her old food and ever since I changed it she eats just fine. But definitely express your concern with the vet tomorrow and they can help determine the problem.

    quit giving treats

Let your Vet decide if it's his teeth, you might try canned, if it's his teeth he will eat...............

I hope this helped!!!I bet your doggy's gonna be fine!!!

Sometimes the reason why they don't seem interested of their food is if they have eaten human food. I know it sounds weird but human food has more of a taste and he would probably get bored of his food. You can try to mix different food and maybe get him used to it again but just know that once you start feeding him/her human food it will be hard to get him used to his food again. Hope this helps a little
