R&P ~ what are your favourite songs about gardens, plants, trees, flowers, herbs, nature or Spring?

Good morning R&P :)

Yes, I'm actually asking a Q ~ it has been a while!

Have you ever had a man in a shed in your garden? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rbrd7MILqmQ&fmt=18 We did yesterday ~ he was taking it down for us!

Now that the garden is coming together, and Spring is on the horizon, I'm in the mood for some songs along this theme. So, what can you offer me?

Feel free to go off on a tangent, but if the connection is a bit obscure or esoteric, please explain. * British wildlife can be included *

A few of my favourites :~

'The Garden of Jane Delawney' ~ Trees

'The Green Man' ~ Type O Negative

'Velvet Green' ~ Jethro Tull

No link for this one, but here's the lyrics: 'The Gardeners' ~ John Martyn

BQ: Any favourite poems or pieces of writing on the subject?

"I am the Song" by Charles Causley http://forum.caithness.org/archive/index.php/t-135...

"A Poison Tree" by William Blake http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/a-poison-tree/

"Planet Earth" by P.K. Page http://www.ecospherics.net/pages/PagePlanetEarth.h...

BQ2: Does anyone know any songs about Owls?

{owls have been 'in' since the late 60s, but they seem to be especially 'in' right now!}

BQ3: Since I'm covering more than one of The Arts here:

Do you have any favourite art or illustrations on the subject?

* not a fav of mine, but a very good artist: http://www.peterpracownik.com/pages/green-man-art-...

Good morning gentlemen :)

Yes, it's really me ~ can't you tell? I'm a one-off!

Whenever I hear mention of Tiny Tim, I recall this "Garfield" cartoon of him romping through flowers http://images.ucomics.com/comics/ga/1982/ga821205....

Update 3:

Listening to links...

@ J: Despite going through a 1960s addiction in my teens, and liking a lot of songs by The Kinks, I have to admit this is the first time I've listened to that one {aware of it, but never heard}. It's making me nostalgic for an era I wasn't even part of!

I was never into VU {except 'Venus in Furs', which I adore}, but I wouldn't mind that being on the radio...

Always nice to see a Dylan Thomas poem other than "Do Not Go Gentle"! On a different subject, I like "In My Craft or Sullen Art" http://www.poetryarchive.org/poetryarchive/singleP...

@ Colin: Of course 'Hanging Tree' counts ~ it's a tree :)

@ Captain: Keep your small onions to yourself young man!

The only songs there I already know are 'Flowers of the Forest' {Fairport Convention}, and 'Fox on the Run'. Several others there where I know a song or two by the bands, but not these songs.

The Levelers are a bit too '90s' for me, but I like the rhythms in that ~ reminds me of the album Capercail

Update 5:

Whoops! Error!

... Capercaillie made with Will Mowat {Soul II Soul} which blended Celtic & African music.

Hello 1980s! The Cure passed me by, but I do like the music.

Now, I never got into REM, and I'm afraid I didn't like the first, but the second was interesting ~ taking the title of a trad song and making something new but keeping those 'folky' stylings in the lyrics.

Ooo... 'Orca' was interesting. I like the way it built, and I heard elements of 'The Green Manalishi' in there!

Not sure about the vocal on 'Tobin's Spirit Guide', but I like the lyrics and the music. Time to go twitch some weird owls...

Update 6:

@ Bob : Hello. Another one where I know the band but not the song, and that was really nice, thank you :)

Update 7:

Damn my perfectionist streak: I *really* wish I could remove that double post up there ~ it's using valuable comment space!

@ Mike H: A few there I know ~ I have another version of 'The Rose' ~ a beautiful song. I *adore* Sting's 'Desert Rose' {and the album it comes from}, and 'Kiss from a Rose'. I have Nigel Kennedy's version of "The Four Seasons" {he also did Vaughan-Williams' 'The Lark Ascending'}, and I like 'Mother Nature's Son'.

The only Tommy James song I know is 'Mony Mony', so nice to hear another one, and I really like the music. Ivy League weren't my thing, nor was 'Pieces of April'. Not a big Rolling Stones fan... I've never listened to The Guess Who ~ why is that never on the radio here?!

@ David V: We learnt 'Where Have all the Flowers Gone' in primary school!

I'm afraid 'Grazing in the Grass' and John Fogarty are not my thing. I only know one Iron Butterfly song {sure you can guess which one!} ~ very 60s. I'm going to have to steal 'East of the Ginger Tree' as a ti

Update 8:

as a title for a poem! I liked 'Not Even the Trees', particularly the opening lyrics. More The Guess Who(!) - I enjoyed that :) Gerry! Now that I really enjoyed!

Thank you for the poem - now I know where Ogden Nash got his inspiration from: "I think that I shall never see a billboard lovely as a tree. Indeed, unless the billboards fall I'll never see a tree at all."

@ Missy: I know 'Sweet Leaf'! {great song}. I'm sure I've heard 'In the Garden' at some point, long ago... Johnny Cash ~ don't like the song, but he had a great voice. No Tony Orlando!

@ Beatle: {{{hug}}} ooo... 2 'man-sheds'! I've not heard that much MMEB {"Solar Fire" album, and 'BbtL'}, so it's always interesting to hear something 'new'. I don't know if I've been to Llanerchyrfa, but I have been to Brecon & the Brecon Beacons. Now, I'm not a Rush fan because of the vocals, but I did enjoy that {perhaps Jethro Tull could cover it!}.

Update 9:

We had M.C. Escher posters on the walls at primary school, and I recall Clannad had a picture on one of their albums http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Clannadpast.jpg

@ Ritchie: I always liked 'Octopus' Garden' :) and 'English Rose' is beautiful {and that's a great video}~ heard it for the first time only last year. I've never been into The Ramones, but I did listen! The Dead Kennedy's aren't my thing. I guess Mr Clapton had to get in there somewhere(!) ~ very pretty.

@ Punch: {{{hug}}} Nothing like a bit of S&G on a dreary Sunday afternoon to pick things up! I wouldn't advise legalising the stuff that's out on the streets now, but back then... Ahh... the trees they do grow high ~ I loved that interaction at the start! 'God is in the Roses' ~ beautiful, and I'm going to have to share it now :) You know I love 'Bella Donna', and it was really nice to hear how it started out. I had a 'best of' album first, then got "Bella Donna", and as soon as I heard that opening song, I knew I had

Update 10:

to have more albums! I'm sure I heard 'Nature Boy' on radio recently, and that quote is so true. There have been times in my life I can connect to 'Black and White Boy', and I really enjoyed it!

@ Shades: One of Sarah's most beautiful songs, from my favourite of her albums :) It also calls 'Fear' to mind ~ "Wind in time rapes the flower trembling on the vine. Nothing yields to shelter it from above."

@ Canadian Bacon: That happens to be in my top 10 GN'R songs!

@ Anna: More Vivaldi is always welcome. 'My Black Rose' was *wonderful* ~ thank you for that! And so was 'Dark Horse' {yes, horses count!} ~ we were talking about piano music last night, and it is one of my favourite things :)

Update 11:

@ KP: Thank you for coming Sir {the party's not over yet!}. My uncle had a PC like that ~ it exploded! I do enjoy 'The Mummer's Dance', and since it mentions nature *and* owls - "When owls call the breathless moon" {great lyric} - bonus to you sir! 'Last Rose of Summer' is one of the few JP songs I'm into, and though I haven't heard 'Imaginary' for a while, it has some interesting lyrics too.

@ Trickzta: Poor Joan - maybe the florist made an error?! I liked The Cherokees {takes me back to my 1960s addiction}. I couldn’t get into the vocals on ‘Songs of Wolves’, but I like the music. “Baby come back...” – that’s my knowledge of The Equals! I don’t know what a Slipper Tree is, but I enjoyed that. I haven’t heard ‘English Country Garden’ since I was little, but I prefer the first version.

Update 12:

‘The Owl Song’ – haha! Now, I never got into Nirvana {Grunge pretty much passed me by}, but I did listen, though it doesn’t do it for me...

@ Captain F: Owls are my #3, after Wolves and Butterflies.

Here are my new acquaintances: http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w21/SilverWolfe...

And here’s another song, a Fleetwood Mac favourite ‘Running Through the Garden’ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihtrb3WCc5I&fmt=18
