NFL Scouting Combine - What is the point?

Go ahead and laugh at me but I just don't get the point of the NFL Scouting Combine. Haven't these players been scouted and analyzed during college? Many of the colleges have pro days for this purpose - and we're watching workouts, right? And why is this televised? ...and why am I still watching it?

They combine shows the raw talent, tests intelligence, and several other stats. It shows the basic abilities of a core group of athletes. While yes the teams will always look into college games, the combine allows teams to get more of an up close look at the player. If it wasn't for the combine, the Colts probably would have grabbed Ryan Leaf over Peyton Manning, the Texans would have got Reggie Bush over Mario Williams.. those are just two of the hundreds of picks determined off of combine interviews and tests and everything. Doesn't always lead to a better pick but most of the time it does for the team.

Just goes to show how popular the NFL is. Laugh If you want, but when you were 19-20 years old, were you on live national TV, being watched by millions of people, just working out?

    I agree.

Teams also have their own pro days at a players' campuses.

The NFL Combine is NOTHING more than a publicity show.

i think they could do without it, but it gives nfl scouts a final organized analysis of all of the players. that's where sprint times and stuff are recorded also...and it is the place where BamaAndy finally learns that the Auburn recruits are collectively a whole lot better than the bama ones

It is to get arbitrary results. Everyone does the same drills at the same time on the same material in the same conditions. This allows them to compare the results easily rather than worrying about discrepancies because someone ran on grass, another on turf and another on a track as well as someone having a wind advantage.

I'm not laughing. I agree with you. It's mainly so the NFL network has some programming to offer.
