Where are some good places to live around Nashville, TN?

My boyfriend and I will be moving to the area within the next few weeks. Does anyone have any suggestions on some good places to live? I will be going to school in Nashville while my bf works in Franklin. We have pets, one being a great dane, that will be coming along with us and are looking for something that can accommodate these needs. I am also looking for a relatively safe area. I grew up an hour outside of Nashville in a place where we didn't find it necessary to lock our doors. I realize I'm not going to find this in Nashville but I don't want to be in a high crime area. I just need affordable, pet friendly, and safe housing for a young couple.

I guess I am just looking for some insight or experiences you guys have had in the Nashville area. Any information is welcome.

Unfortunately, Nashville is one of those cities where the "nice areas" are few and far between, which means they're all in high demand (which equals more expensive rent) and they're scattered all over the place, in between the "bad areas." I.E., you can live on a really nice street in east Nashville but two streets over is a whole street of projects. etc. It's not like that everywhere, there ARE some bigger areas that are considered nice (Green Hills, Brentwood, some parts of west Nash, etc) but these places are a bit more expensive to live.

If you want to live directly in between Franklin and Nashville, Brentwood is definitely your best bet. It'll be about a 15-20 minute drive both ways (to Nashville or Franklin), of course, depending on traffic. Rush hour will add time to the drive quite a bit. Brentwood is an upscale (for the most part) community, so 1 and 2 bedroom apartments can range anywhere from $800 to $1300 - just depends on what you're looking for.

Here's what works for my husband and I. We live in the west Nashville area directly off of a main road (about 10-15 minutes from downtown, about 3 minutes from I-440). Rent is about $1050 for a small one bedroom. I work east of Nashville, in an area called Donelson (very close to the airport). My husband works in Franklin. My commute is only about 15 minutes, his is only about 20 minutes because we are both driving the opposite direction of rush hour traffic each way (since most people are heading into town in the morning, yet we're heading out of town towards our jobs every morning, and vice versa). It works for us - much better than living in Brentwood where, in my opinion, the traffic is worse and depending on where you live, you may not be very close to an interstate at all.

You'll come to realize in Nashville that the road systems are not laid out in the most logical way, it's VERY easy to get lost, and traffic is absolutely horrible (a combination of bad drivers and bad road systems). Not trying to discourage you at all, just some helpful info - it's much more tolerable if you live near an interstate and can drive away from traffic in your morning/evening commute, if possible.

Here's a general list of parts of town/popular roads:

Green Hills, 21st Ave (near Vandy/Belmont), 12th Ave S, West End Ave: All of these areas are only about 10-15 minutes from downtown. They are pretty popular areas to live, so rent can be high, even for apartments that are run-down/haven't been renovated in a while. ANY of these areas I would definitely recommend if you can afford it.

East Nashville: You don't want to live here if your boyfriend works in Franklin - his commute will be a good 45 minutes or more, one way, every day. Also, parts of east Nashville are not-so-nice or safe. The areas that are nice (mostly on or around Eastland Ave) are expensive to live. Not many apartments complexes that I know of in this area, just houses for rent.

West Nashville / West Meade: the parts closer to downtown are nice and somewhat affordable, depending on the circumstances. As you go further down West End though (away from downtown) it can definitely add time to your commute, and it definitely becomes much more upscale as far as cost of rent/etc.

Donelson, Antioch, Hermitage: All of these areas are much cheaper to live in, but are a good 20-30 minutes east of downtown and are rundown. Not as "hip," not many cool things to do, mostly just chain restaurants, etc. etc. Much more affordable than the previously mentioned areas, however. But again, with your boyfriend working in Franklin, I wouldn't recommend living here just because of the awful commute he would have to make.

Anyways, hopefully at least some of this info will help you in your decision.

Nashville definitely has a lot of pros and cons. Hopefully you will like it!

I moved here about 2.5 years ago from the Los Angeles area and love it here. Yes, it's a big adjustment in weather, but you get four real seasons without really harsh winters or really hot summers (certainly by Florida humidity standards). I think it depends on your priorities. Most moving here with kids in school try to get into Williamson County, which means Franklin, Brentwood (two pretty expensive areas by local standards) and maybe Spring Hill. That's because Williamson is known for the best public schools. If you think you might move again before you're worried about school, or you will pay for private school, there are great places in Davidson County, as well. I live in Sylvan Park, which is an old neighborhood with houses built mostly in the 1920s and 30s. It's pretty affordable (very much so by CA standards) and has walkable food and drink. I guess it all depends on what you want. If you want nice suburbs with new houses and decent-sized yards, that would be Williamson County. Bellevue is west and also has nice, reasonably new houses and shopping nearby - I just don't know as much about it. Definitely spend some time with a realtor and make sure he or she knows exactly what matters most to you. Another thing - I moved here and rented for a year before deciding where to buy, and I couldn't be happier...
