Do people who play musical instruments sing better than people who don't?

They might have better understanding of notes so they can match them with their voice?

Not necessarily. I play several instruments proficiently but I'm not a good singer. No range, no falsetto, no tone... I can sing on-key , can manage a few backups here and there but that's about it. I had to take sight-singing in college and I took voice lessons too - but at the end of the day your singing voice is what it is. I was not blessed with the God-given bone structure and throat necessary to be a good singer. Not don't get me wrong - playing instruments has helped me be a better singer than i would have been otherwise - it helps with sight-singing, it helps with being able to hear intervals and sing them cleanly, etc. But it's not going to give you vocal talent you didn't have.

IMO- All singers should learn to play keyboards or guitar. And all instrumentalists should learn to sight-sing and harmonize by ear - it makes you more marketable as a player or a singer. But don't expect playing something to suddenly transform an average voice into Brad Delp or Carrie Underwood or something - it won't happen.

Not necessarily people who play musical instruments, but anyone with a musical background will sing better, just because of the background and understanding. But like has already been said, a bad voice is a bad voice, and the only way to really sing better is to practice and get training/lessons.

I sing and I'm sure I could learn a musical instrument but I can't read music.

Um.. just what DREAM WORLD do YOU live in?.. The main reason I play Piano and Organ and Guitar is so that I DON'T HAVE TO SING.. It's not that I can't sing.. when I was younger I was pretty good at it.. but when I turned about 50 I LOST MY VOICE.. probably from too many years of playing in smokey bars and bawdy houses and too much bad whiskey.. whatever the cause.. I don't have a singing voice these days.. so I just play for others to do that heavy lifting.
