Pizza delivery tip question?

I feel like I'm a pretty generous tipper when it comes to eating out in most circumstances. I'll leave a minimum of 15 to 20% even for poor service in most situations, although there have been a few really drastic circumstances where I have left less or no tip.

However, I have always questioned myself on pizza delivery tips.

For example, I'd like to order pizza tonight. Total will be around $20, including $1.75 pizza delivery fee (which I know does not go directly to the driver and should not be considered part of the tip). I will be ordering two pizzas, and it's a small town so the pizza place I'd like to order from only has one location. I'm about 15 minutes away from the pizza place, and on the very edge of their delivery area.

Is a $5 tip sufficient? If I placed the same order in a large city, I'd feel this was more than generous, but I feel a little skimpy because I'm afraid I might be disappointed with that tip for the work, especially with gas prices and all the car maintenance issues. But, on the other hand, I begin thinking that if they have accepted this position, they must be satisfied with the compensation, and I've never really heard any opinions on changing the amount of the tip based on the size of the area - whether it's a large city or small town.

So, what are your opinions on tipping for pizza delivery?

Update:

Chasing L - I really like Papa Murphy's pizza, too, but I am having bad allergy problems and don't feel like cooking tonight. I usually just drive in to town to pick up my pizza, since I'm never really confident about my pizza delivery tips and whether they're okay or not - but tonight, I'm looking for the easiest way to get some dinner.

I'm a pizza delivery driver. I'm guessing that you are 5-8 miles from the store. Although completely unrealistic to typically expect (tips at the edge of the delivery area usually are horrible or barely acceptable), I think $1 a mile one-way for deliveries 4+ miles away is a good minimum to go by. I'd tip more than that, but I don't expect anybody else to.

I usually have a $2-$2.50 tip average, but I live in a poor lower cost of living area. That's taking into account multiple nontippers and the $5-$10 tippers that hopefully make up for them.

A tip will be a great deal beloved, because the delivery charge is going to the corporate to pay for the motive force's gasoline. many times situations, nutrients workers who would get information are paid decrease than minimum salary with the aid of the undeniable fact that's known that information will make up the version. Too, that's the guy who basically presented you a yummy dinner so that you probably did not opt to a) prepare dinner, b) power someplace for instantaneous nutrients, and c) omit any of the game on television. That benefits a tip.

When someone gives poor service, I recommend leaving a penny or two. Something like that is like saying, your service was sh1t, those are my two cents about that.

5 dollars is very fine. Personally, I never have pizza delivered. I go to a place called papa murphys. I don't know where you are but if they are in your area, try them out. Their pizza is freakin awesome, it's uncooked when you get it, you take it home and put it in the oven. What pizza could be more fresh than the one that was just made and came out of your oven?

a $5 tip is sufficient. for any delivery to my house i usually tip at least $5. if the bill comes to $23, i will just give the guy $30 and tell him to keep the change. the extra $2 isn't going to hurt me any, and the delivery guy always appreciates it.

a good friend of mine has been delivering pizzas for about 3 years now. and he has told me that his average tip is about $3. and he usually remembers the houses that tip more, and he will hurry to them faster.

I'd say a $5 dollar tip would be generous and appropriate. And bless you for being so considerate towards people and taking such a thing so seriously when so many others wouldn't really care - I applaud you!
