Laptop SATA HD replacement?

Hello

I have little experience with Notebook repairs compared to my extensive experience with desktops.

So a little wisdom would be appreciated. =)

Got an Acer aspire model number- AS6930-6067 im repairing for a family member,

Would get to Vista load screen with the yellow bar and Mirosoft copyright (right before GUI pops up) and stay and never load.

Restored using acer restore... took longer than the average restore but once it was done windows loaded great and was fast. Used it for a whinstallinglling junk software then gave it back... Problem came back.

My first guess is a bad HD. Wnat to one from flea-bay and pop in here. Same specs 320GB 5400RPM etc.

Question:

Since the restore data is a partition on the Bad HD, what would I need to get it onto the new drive.

My desktop has many SATA connectors and mounting for 2.5" but i dont know if ill need power/data cable adapters

I could use a vista install DVD but dont know one who has one.

Thanks in Advance.

Update:

Thanks for both the answers (at the time of added details). I guess the cheapest way is to order a restore disc and install the new bare HD.

You can buy a 2.5" SATA hard drive, 5400 is OK, 7200 RPM is better, up to 500 GB in size.

Easiest thing to do is to also buy a 2.5" USB / SATA drive enclosure for about $20. This lets you put the new drive into the enclosure to recover information off the old drive. Clone the old drive to the new if you can. Then swap the new drive in. Alternatively, put the new drrive in and install a fresh OS from the DVD, then put the old drive in the enclosure and scavenge your data files off of it.

A 2.5 inch SATA hard drive 5400 or 7200 RPM of ant storage size up to 500 GB will work.

Unplug from power adapter, turn off, turn over remove battery cover and battery, remove hard drive cover, remove hard drive by releasing small latch at each side or small screws pull up at 45% angle and out. Reverse to install. You will no longer have the eRecovery partition on the new hard drive.

Then you need the system eRecovery disc set made for the lap top, order by model and serial number from Acer support then use to install original operating system to new hard drive keeping it a legal copy of Windows using the original software product key code on bottom of lap top.

you will see somewhat longer postpone whilst getting access to data on the stress. this may well be once you open and keep data, launch purposes, etc. i might propose getting a stress a minimum of as quickly as what you presently have. If velocity isn't a concern to you and you're only searching for greater area for storing, evaluate an exterior storage gadget (thumb drives, exterior no longer easy stress, etc.)
