Is it possible to change the column name in Excel?

Can we change A, B, C, D,... columns into a user defined name? (for instance Invoices, Taxes, Profit,...)

As Jamie K stated, no you cannot change the column 'names' to 'Taxes', etc. You can only change them to numbers, using the R1C1 reference style, or retain them as letters.

You must use the first row as your column headers. If you want to lose the 'A, B, C, D', etc then hide the row and column headers.

    Excel 2003:

Go to Tools > Options > View

Remove the check mark from 'Row & Column Headers' in the Window Options

    Excel 2010:

    Select the View tab.

Remove the check mark from 'Heading' in the 'Show' group.

Why are you wanting to do this? Is it because when you scroll down, you can't see the headers? Why not just freeze the top row....In Excel 2007 and later, click the View tab, then "Freeze Panes", then "Freeze Top Row". (not sure how to do it in earlier versions).

If the reason you are wanting to this is so it can be used in formulas, then move the cursor over the A column name and when the cursor changes to a down arrow, click. Then in the name box (the box to the left of the formula box), type Invoices. You can now use Invoices instead of the column in your formulas. Example below

    =INDEX(Invoices,33)

If you want to change the column name for sorting purposes just be sure to check the "my data has headers" box in the sort dialogue box. Then whatever titles are in your top row will become the names of your columns.

Rows numbers and column letters are used for reference. It is easy to name your columns then fill in the data. When you sort or use subtotals the first column of you data block will be recognized as the header.
