I'm writing a novel. Do I have to get special permission to use the names of movies, songs, TV shows in it?

What about quoting song lyrics? This is to bring the reader back to the 80's and how my character is very much into music. Or am I supposed to just list the source in the back of the book or bottom of the page in italics...?

I wouldn't worry about any of that until you finish it, revise it, and then decide to try to get it published.

Titles are not copyrighted, so you can mention them all you want, but you would need to obtain permission for song lyrics.

I believe it's ok to use names, but lyrics require special permission.

Lyrics are copyrighted but snippets would probably qualify as fair use. But beware of defamation.
