Rap & Hip Hop: My review of "Lasers" by Lupe Fiasco?

Add in your own two cents, but for now... here we go:

The album starts off with "Letting Go" which, I actually have to say is dope. The chorus is catchy, the verses are really nice, the second is probably the best:

"I'm begging you don't let me go/We vowed like the letter "O"/To never go our separate ways/To spin off into separate shows/Tired of all the wardrobe changing/Playing all these extra roles/Filled with all these different spirits/Living off these separate souls"

(Dope as hell)

The second track is produced by Alex Da Kid, who is my most hated producer but surprisingly the beat is not bad... it's heavy and fits the songs meaning really nice. I don't really see the idea of "club banger" on this one like everyone says the whole album is similar to Nas' "I Am".

Third, "Till I Get There" is nice to me, it feels like some of Lupe's mixtape songs. Lyrics are dope, the beat is simple but it does it's job. Really nice, and chill song.

Fourth, "I Don't Wanna Care Right Now" this is probably the only "club banger" track I can see to the fullest, pumping bass, etc... screams "club banger" none-the-less, this is a dope-as-hell track. Am I the only one thinking this? "They yester, and I'm today and tomorrow... hurray! Can I get a hip-hip for the new K-I-N-G, n*gga I am he" << Come on, that's dope to me.

Okay... fifth off, "Out of my Head" featuring Trey Songz, this is probably my least favorite on the album. I really don't dig Trey Songz first off, so I didn't really give it a chance... also, I really don't care for Lupe making a love song, his wordplay about the "woman/song" is nice though.

Sixth, "The Show Goes On"... I actually find this wack, Lupe is much better than this... I mean it's inspiring but I'm tired of rappers making these types of songs... Eminem's played this sh*t out, plus this makes it onto the album but not "Go To Sleep" or "I'm Beaming", f*ck Atlantic records.

Seventh, heaven... that's seriously is what this track is to me. Lupe kinda has me worried about him though, he speaks a lot on suicide on this track because he's being felt like all he can do is wrong, and this album is a lot of Atlantic's control over him taking away his creativity and turning him into a musical corpse. Dope as hell track though.

Eighth, "Coming Up", this reminds me of some Tupac "Keep Ya Head Up" stuff, the chorus is really inane in such a serious song. "Come on and get your dance on now"? Nah... verses are good though.

Ninth inner, "State Run Radio", I like the idea about how the radio controls a lot of the people in the world. Tracks like this always interest me. Dope to me.

Tenth, "Break The Chain", obvious by the title it's about racism/slavery and other things. Lupe's verses on it are insane to me. The beat is poppy but his first verse is crazy.

Eleventh, "All Black Everything", most people will love this track. It's usual Lupe on a "The Cool"-ish beat, lyrically beautiful. The beat is nice too, the sampled vocals can get annoying to me though.

Twelfth, "Never Forget You", okay first off John Legend is making some sad choruses on rap songs lately "Blame Game" and now this? Damn... this though, I love. I'm a sucker for love songs, but Lupe's optimistic views on an ended relationship are uplifting. Personally, I dig it.

Okay, now here's my full review/opinion on the album.

As the fans wanted Lupe Fiasco put out "Lasers", what you may not notice is that Atlantic told him awhile back his originally songs listing for "Lasers" were not "radio-friendly" enough. They turned him into a label corpse. He created some nice songs, and some club songs. Both being really, really dope to me. He even said himself he doesn't really care for the album at all, he actually hates it. He likes some songs, but at the same time he doesn't really like it at all. I believe fans will call this Lupe's "I Am" most likely, but Nas had a choice in that... Lupe really didn't seem to have a choice in this. I do believe "Food & Liquor II" will be a lot better than this, and hopefully "Go To Sleep" will be released on that. I also hope Lupe gets over this depressing area of his life, some of these songs lyrics make me worry about him. None the less, it is an enjoyable album.

Update:

Savage Cap, the new Radiohead album = Jesus.

I'm not recommending that though, God is... and it's really not recommending... it's more of demanding you to listen or you shall go to hell.

Worst album i've heard in a long time. I'll have to remind myself to never take recs from you.

I like Radiohead though. How the hell did you manage to like Lasers?

I thought the album sucked. Lupe sounded uninspired on half the tracks. The production was overall garbage and the hooks couldn't have been worse. I also found it wholly ironic that Lupe tried to get political over pop beats. He's getting all Immortal Technique on us but he's clearly having creative licensing issues.

And I don't blame Lupe for this hot mess, Atlantic clearly screwed him. The album should be aptly titled: Atlantic Records "LASERS". "Have you ever had the feeling that you were being had?" I think Lupe does.

I actually liked it. Can't believe people give it a 1/5 just for the production and hooks. I'd say 3/5 at least. He really didn't have a choice since the whole LupEND thing got screwed over by his damn label. He deserves another chance because of all the stuff his label put him through. But "I Don't Wanna Care Right Now" is a disgrace and i almost wanted to boycott Lupe for it.

He also sounds less confident now. For example on "Words I Never Said" he says "I really think the war on terrorism is a bunch of bullshit". Before he would've said "The war on terrorism is a bunch of bullshit."

ur the first person ive heard say i dont wanna care right now was anything but garbage...it and outta my head were my two least faves the rest were solid to dope

it was short he rarely spit more than two verses and the beat selection was bad for the most part but hes still dope when he dumbs it down. even tho its bot his album its enjoyable with 4-5 really good tracks. i dug it 7.5/10. if lasers sells well hell likely get full creative control for his next albums if he stays with atlantic

    Wow, you actually liked Lasers?

I agree some of the lyrics were quite good but I couldn't get past the God awful production and bad choruses. It's a solid 1/5.

I honestly think that the reason he gave us for changing his music is bull

I forgot the tittle of the song, but he is talking about the world trade and the war on Iraq

    not radio friendly at all

This album is awesome. Listen to the reviews of accredited individuals, not the biased losers on here. Lupe is one of the only original artists in the industry.

Lasers gets a nice 1.5/5. It sucked, but I was in love with the last two.
