Why is AlCl3 Aluminum Chloride and not Aluminum Trichloride?

I was just wondering why AlCl3 was aluminum chloride and not Aluminum Trichloride

    Because of the valency of the aluminum - it's naturally three, so you would naturally expect it to bind with 3 chloride ions. It's not incorrect, as such, but a tautology.

    It is because aluminum chloride (AlCl3) is an ionic compound. Nomenclature for an ionic compound consists of the name of the first element (i.e. aluminum) plus the prefix for the second element, followed by -ide (i.e. chloride).

    It is b. Al = Aluminum Cl = Chlorine
