On my period now for a fortnight?

I've been on my period now for around 2 weeks.

Can this be a symptom of something/should I be worried?

I should mention that I have the contraceptive implant, and when I first had it put it I didn't have my period for roughly a year as a side-effect. Could this be another side-effect?

Would you personally see a doctor?

For some women, the implant can stop periods altogether or reduce them vastly. For the rest of us unfortunate lot, it can cause irregular bleeding.

I have always suffered from mennorghia (extremely heavy periods) but it has been made worse since I had the implant fitted. On for 3 weeks, off for 2 days, then back on again... quite a viscious cycle. I would leave it a few more days because this might just be a one off because you haven't had a period for quite some time. If it hasn't stopped after a few days then go see your GP. They will probably prescribe something like Mefanemic Acid or Norethisterone. Mefanemic Acid is a good form of pain relief and also lightens the period whereas Noresthisterone lightens the period over 24-48 hours and then stops it altogether. There is normally a bit of light spotting a couple of days afterwards but then that subsides. If this becomes a regular occurance then you might want to change to a different form of contraceptive. A lot of women prefer the coil because that supposedly reduces the flow alot but I have never had that and have heard a few 'horror stories' from friends about it. I am currently on the waiting list to have endometrial ablation to put an end to my problems.

See your doctor- you might have any one of a number of conditions- from infection to endometriosis...

And it might be linked to the implant somehow.

You didn't say what type of implant- there have been a few lawsuits over the problems associated with implants...you should google the brand name of the implant to see what problems are associated with it.

In the first year after the implant is fitted, your periods may become irregular, lighter, heavier or longer. This usually settles down after the first year.

if your really worried, see your doctor
