What form of email application are you trying to use, i.e. Outlook, Outlook Express, MS Mail or a web-based one?
From the sounds of what you're describing, it sounds like your being presented with a Captcha image, so it would be a web-based mail system.
Can you advise what you're using?

Close your computer down, when you turn it on do a full system check and restart, you should be OK
