why does my car drive in neutral is my transmission bad?

hi i just bought a car a 1992 new yorker the people told me that they put in an transmission but the gears got switched around so the car drives in neutral also it drives in drive so i'm confused on which gear to drive in an when i do drive in neutral the car jerks so does this mean that i need a whole new transmission

does anyone no which gear to drive in if there switched around because i was told a car does not supposed to drive in neutral

    Could just be that the linkage between the transmission and the shifter needs adjusting.
