A friend gave me a Linksys wireless router and cannot remember the password?

I have it hooked up and see the connection on my laptop. Now it is asking for the Network Key to connect. He doesn't remember what it is. Do I have to go buy my own? or get wireless through the cable company?

The easiest thing to do is reset the router to the default factory settings.

To restore the router configuration to factory defaults, hold the reset button on the unit for 30 seconds.

Once your router is hard reset, you will need to login and configure it again.

To reconfigure your LinkSys, connect a PC to one of it's Ethernet ports, load a web browser, and go to the URL http://192.168.1.1/ This will take you to a popup box which asks you to enter a username and password to login to your router.

    ----

On older LinkSys routers, the default username is blank and the default password is "admin." On newer Linksys routers, both the default username and the default password are set to "admin."

Once you go past the login screen, you should be able to reconfigure the LinkSys router

    ----

Note: If this doesn't work for you, try google searching the exact model of the router along with the keywords reset password.

google: " linksys [model number] reset password " without the quotation marks.

Look behind the router, near where the power cord plugs in, there should be a button there that says reset.

This button is what is called a "Hard Reset" it will make the router go back to the way it was when it was bought and will set the password to it's default:

    ADMIN

    or

    admin

You need to log in to it wired as described in the manual, then read the key from the wireless security section. Or do a hard reset and then configure it from scratch.
