I've literally seen 3 questions about this today. No, Japan is on the other side of the world to America, and on the off chance that toxic gases are released, the farthest it'll go is about 100 km in radius around it... The power plant did not contain enough radiation to cover the entire world and cause the apocalypse...

You can calm down a bit, because there's not much chance that it will effect us in the USA. We are literally on the other side of the planet, father from the west coast to the east coast, there won't be any natural spreading of radiation from Japan to here. Even the distance between Japan and Hawaii is far too great for a direct line of contamination.

Some of the other responders are talking about what happened in Chernobyl but these are completely different situations. That power plant had no failsafe to contain the radiation in the event of a meltdown, whereas the one in Japan does. In Japan they are currently evacuating people that are closest, but most of the country is unaffected by this specific aspect of the earthquake.

Here's one of many internet articles on the subject:

..Yes. -__-. Nuclear Radiation from a magnitude like that will affect most of the world. It is strong enough for even a light wind to carry it to Russia, Korea, and China (hence why Russia was trying so hard to help Japan with this). When it enters the atmosphere, the radiation will be released as rain, we know this both in theory and because it happened after the Chernobyl incident in Ukraine (and the reactor in Fukushima is 10x larger than the one in Chernobyl)

But it won't affect Hawaii that much more than mainland US, unless there is a strong wave blowing directly for Hawaii from Fukushima, Japan.

no, hopefully the radiation would only be around the area where the nuclear power plant is

Nope, not even in some parts in Japan, so don'T worry! :)
