Is there a family friendly game-ish networking chat like IMVU or Second Life?
My mother is a people loving person and as a housewife, she doesn't get out much. She does get out and have some friends but she could use more harmless interaction, especially with the internet and a laptop at her disposal. I was hoping to give her an opportunity to expand and learn a thing or two about pop culture and just what's on people's minds. The tv stays on Foodtv or the cooking channel whichever it is so shes into cooking, but her routine is so monotonous. I just want her exposed to other things without getting hit up for her number and stupid crap like that, I guess is what I'm trying to say...
Her other interests include: Drinking. lol thanks in advance.

Well the answer is already there. Second Life (SL) is a great community platform. You may have heard about nothing but endless romances or promiscuous sexual behaviour in Second Life, but I think that's something you will find in any environment like SL and to be perfectly honest, all of those stories are greatly exaggerated. For a little while I played a strategy game called Evony and even though there was absolutely no sexual content in that game, I was still getting hit on daily by geeky guys - more than I ever have in Second Life. The cranks, idiots and sex obsessed are just everywhere these days. In SL, you learn to ignore the people who hit on you and once you have a few friends with shared interests, you find yourself in places where like-minded folks hang out and there is very little pestering for sex. I'm very clear that details about my real life stay private. No one gets my real phone number, my real world location, real life pictures or information about my family. I only use voice chat with a very few select friends. If anything, I find that SL is less intimidating in this respect that any other online community.
Many of the women who use SL are there because they are in a similar situation to your mother's. Many have children to care for. Some have disabled family members. Some are even disabled themselves. Whatever the reason, many are tied to their homes and the opportunity to go out and socialise is something that is no longer an easy option. I know from my own experience that I have seen my real life friends marry, have children and move away from the area where we grew up. I'm now too old to hang out at the sort of clubs I went to in my teens and 20s. Hanging out in a bar does not appeal to me one bit and nor does sitting with a bunch of my peers listening to them going on about how much better the old days were. In Second Life you are ageless and free of people's misconceptions about you being older. You can meet people from all over the world who share your interests, no matter how obscure those interest are (mine is world music).
As for drinking, well every so often, a bunch of us gets together and one of us will stream music into Second Life for us all to hear. We share our music and we have a drink or two (OK - a lot more than two) at home, so our tongues loosen and we talk about whatever is the burning issue of the day. Sometimes we just talk about the music. Our avatars can dance to the music and we feel like doing the same at home, we're in private with no fear of embarrassing our children. Our little groups consists mostly of people from Britain, Germany and the US, but we get people from all over who drift in for a while. We're pretty much old hippies and the children of old hippies, so as you can see, it's not hard to find others who share your interests. Our little group has developed trust over the years and we do meet up in real life occasionally.
OK so at some point, a guy is going to hit on your mother, especially if she has the kind of personality that attracts others to her, but most guys in SL will accept no for an answer and if they persist, she can unfriend them and mute them. In 4 and a half years, I have had to mute (I think) three people who behaved like this. One was a very old guy, another a man in his 30s (he was the only really scary one) and the last turned out to be a kid of something like 13. Once muted - problem solved.
You obviously care a lot about your mother, so my suggestion is to join Second Life with her. There are plenty of younger people there too and its a lot of fun. I think it's great you want something more for your mother and she sounds like a fun lady, so I hope she finds a lot of amazing online friends.
