family tree help! (have grandpa's info)?

Hey all,

So I'm trying to put together some sort of family tree. I have my grandfathers SSN, birth place and year, and death place and year. I found a document, a death certificate i believe, but it didnt give me any additional information. Where can i go to search for his parents information and so on? I have been using free sites. The one that i found the death certificate was familysearch.org, its the best free search i've found. Any advice?!

Thanks

Update:

doesn't that cost about 25-30$. I am trying to do this for free. Thanks though!

Update 2:

thanks everyone i'll make a new post with his info!

If you grandfather was born before 1930, he and his parents may show up on the US Census. (The last one made public was 1930.) On Family Search, enter his whole name, state where he was born and year of birth and see if you can find a census record. Family Search is the best of the free sites. Also check Find a Grave for the name and state where he died. Sometimes other relatives or wonderful volunteers post obituaries or other information on the Find a Grave pages.

You can also post the information here and folks will do a look up on several paid sites.

If the information on family search didn't include the names of his parents you could request a copy of the computer print out from Social Security that provided the information he provided when he applied for a Social Security Card, which would have included parents names and place of birth.

Ask your relatives. If your grandpa's brothers or sisters are still alive, try to get into contact with them.

If you want any help from us, share some basic info and we can take a look.
