Family Guy Question 10 Points!?

Im pretty sure if you have seen family guy, you know who Stewie is, the talking baby (not sure about spellin :) When he talks its obvious that Brian understands him and other babies and the other characters that make one second apperances...but what about the main characters like Lois and Peter. Do they understand Stewie. Some episodes it seems like it but other episodes it doesnt.

Update:

Its also weird that he is able to perform on stage but they dont understand him

Much confusion has occurred over whether or not the family can understand Stewie's speech, especially given his tendency towards homicidal remarks. The Griffins appear to ignore most of what Stewie says, though on occasion they have responded to his speech, but they could only be responding to his facial expressions or body language (also could just be selective hearing, like they never really hear what he is saying except on certain parts).

This has been referred in "E. Peterbus Unum" as a meta-joke. The end of the episode reveals it actually being a historical video, projected to a group of students in the future. When the presenter asks if there are any questions, one of the students responds with "I don't get it. So.... like... can the family understand the baby or... what's the deal with that?" The other students are seen nodding in agreement with the apparent confusion. Only Brian seems to fully understand what he's saying.

Stewie: Just let me do all the talking.

Brian: No, I think I can communicate with her better. She's only going to get the gist of what you're saying.

Stewie: Really? Isn't she one of those people outside the family who can understand me?

Brian: No, I think because of Cleveland she's close enough to the main cast that it might be a little weird.

    Stewie: Really?

    Camera man: We're filming!

Stewie: Okay, okay! Alright, alright! Sorry, sorry.(to Brian) Ring the doorbell.

The main cast cannot understand Stewie but only get the gist of what he's saying or can quess his mood. Brian, oddly the only other character that would normally be mute can talk to, understand, and have conversations with Stewie.

He's only a one year old. The creators found a unique way of writing dialog for a baby and that is for it to be for the benefit of the audience.

When he ranting about killing everyone and taking over the world we hear him but the main cast just hears the babbling of a cranky noisy baby easily shut up with a pacifier shoved into his mouth. He usually falls asleep at that point. Great character!

On occasion other people can understand Stewie. Other children and simple minds like Brian's airhead girlfriend and apparantly the talk radio audience can understand him.
