What bug can be mistaken for a bedbug?

I found one small bug on my mattress while changing the sheets so naturally I panicked and hit the internet terrified that we had a bedbug infestation. However, after going to several sites I just couldnt see the bug I found really resembling any of the photos of any stage of the bedbug.

The bug I found is small and kind of brown but has white or gray speckles on its body. In addition all the websites said that the bedbug was very flat or could make its body very flat, but the bug I found is quite rounded with a hump like shell more shaped like a round beetle.

After much more inspection I found several more tiny bugs just like the first one, but none were on my bed or boxsprings, I found them on the outward facing side of my bedroom curtain. I found these during the day while the sun was hot on that window, in fact it appeared that these little bugs were sunbathing.

The information I found online said they were nocturnal and liked dark hidden places which seems to be complete opposite of the bugs I found. Has anyone had a false alarm OR has anyone seen bedbugs that do look like this and seem to enjoy the sunlight. I just want to know what Im dealing with and how to proceed. Im afraid of dismissing these as another bug and getting a worse infestation if they are bedbugs or paying some high priced exterminator to come out and tell me these are some other bug that are harmless.

Thanks to all.

Bed bugs are incredibly tiny. Roughly the size of a needle head for most of their life.

They shouldn't be large enough to make out speckles. They do not like light at all. They would be in a cool dark place until night fall.

You never see bed bugs first. When you have a bed bug infestation, you see bites. You start to wonder if mosquitoes are bad in the area or if spiders are biting you. Eventually you have so many that it becomes obvious that bedbugs are the culprit.

So unless you have suspected before hand that you may have bed bugs, then you don't have them. They are likely a grain or fabric beetle of some kind.

Also, bed bugs have long proboscuses. Look up the "Assassin Bug" and imagine that but extremely tiny. They are very morphalogically different to other insects and are the only true "bugs".

It could be ticks but I don't think they usually hangout in large numbers together. Go do a yahoo search for 'pictures of ticks' and see if there is a match? Also do the same for 'parasite insect pics in US'.

I fought bedbugs less than a year ago. I won too! I used common sense, not deadly bug sprays. The secret is a dryer! You place all the clothes you wore that day in one for 20 minutes. You do the same for all bedding you used the night before. Also cover your mattress with sealed plastic. I also sprayed my bed frame with about a 10% solution of ammonia at least 4 hours before laying upon my bed (a type of caulking trick).

    I won, I won, I won!

Well usually you can't see a bedbug. You can normally only tell if you have bedbugs ... They say if you have large red welts on your skin or there's blothes of blood on your sheets or comforter. It could maybe mistaken for a tick orsomething relevent to that. I'm not sure....
