Sum of series using partial sum?

find the sum of the series (1/3)^n using partial sums. The sum of the series is 3/2.

how would i go about answering this question?

    Here is one rule:

    1 + 1/x + 1/x^2 + 1/x^3 + .... = x/(x-1)

    The value of our x will be 3 if we will add the series (1/3)^n

    3/(3-1) = 3/2

    Try practicing the formula for other stuffs, hope this helps. =D

    Example:

    1 + 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16 + ... = 2

    This is of the form: r^(n) where r = 1/3

    Sum = 1 / (1 - r) (if and only if the absolute value of r < 1)

    1 / (1 - 1/3) = 1 / (2/3) = 3/2
