PLEASE HELP ME. how do i get rid of a computer virus?

I'm freaking out. My computer has got a virus (and i have no idea what to do about it.) It has anti-virus software, but I don't know which sort of where to find it or run it, as I wasn't the one who installed it. Should I download more anti-virus software or what?? I've never had a virus before and I'm freaking out as it's not my computer.

'The virus' - desktop background has changed to a 'warning' and continual pop-ups telling me I have a virus and to run my software and to pay such and such amount for it (made to look like they're pop-ups from windows)

Anyone?? Anything???

you have a scam program that wants your money.

the only infection is the scam itself.bugs, it really helps if you give us the name of the scam program.

most of the scam programs install a trojan that blocks detection and removal by all antispyware tools and antivirus so its very possible the other two suggestions will not get the bug.

    Reboot

tap the F8 key until you get to the safe mode options

go into safe mode with networking

    be patient, its slow

    download rkill and run it

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-viru...

a command box opens and shuts, then a log appears, it is finished

    download install update malwarebytes

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    let it run a scan

see if the report says it cleaned everything

Run your antivirus and let it do a scan

    restart back to normal mode

tell us the name of the program for better instructions

    hope this helps

I wouldn't download another anti virus, if you are using a windows PC such as vista or 7 then there should be a little flag in the right hand corner of the screen on the desktop/bar and click the flag, open action center then there should be security click the down arrow, you will now be able to see the anti virus software on the PC. open run type in the anti virus program and hit enter or click start and in the box that says search for programs and files type it in and open it up, then do a scan to get the virus off.

    Good luck

There are never any guarantees in malware fighting, but here's my best shot at a generic removal procedure:

First, boot into Safe Mode With Networking. (See below for details.) That sometimes keeps malware from protecting itself. Then, if you have an anti-virus, make sure it has the latest virus definitions and run a full scan with it. If you don’t have one, many people here swear by Malwarebytes (it’s free).

I suggest you also download Ad-Aware Free and Spybot S&D (they’re free), install them, update them and run full scans with them in Safe Mode With Networking.

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

To get into Safe Mode with Networking:

    1. Log out and reboot your machine.

    2. When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.

    3. Select Safe Mode with Networking from the resulting menu.

    4. Login. If the malware has changed your password, try logging in as Administrator. By default, Administrator has no password.

    5. The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different.

    6. When you're finished doing what you need to do, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

Another trick that may enable anti-malware and/or its installer program to sneak past the malware is to change the name of the anti-malware program itself. The names of the files and their locations differ between anti-malware programs, but the procedure is always the same:

    1. In Windows Explorer, find the folder with the anti-malware.

    2. Change the name of the program (it always ends with a .exe) to virtually anything else, but keep the “.exe” part.

    3. Run that.

Note that even if the anti-malware programs get rid of the malware, they may not be able to reverse the effects. Search the Web for possible fixes.

Update and run full scans regularly, not just when you think you already have malware.

    Good luck.

Source(s): Note: There ARE free versions of these reputable programs on the websites listed. They just may not be obvious. Ad-Aware Free (free): http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ Spybot S & D (free): http://www.spybot.com/ MalwareBytes (free) http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (If the program doesn’t run, changing its filename from mbam.exe to something else ending in .exe has sometimes proven effective.) AVG anti-virus (free): http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5/ Avast! (free): http://www.avast.com/ Kaspersky (free trial) (Seems to dislike installing on any machine with just about any other decent anti-malware, including some firewalls.): http://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/

    First: DON'T DOWNLOAD ANYTHING ELSE!

That is the #1 biggest mistake people make while dealing with viruses...

Next: What anti-virus do you have? Open it up, find a button that says ' run a scan ' and do it. Then, clean up and backup files to be safe (I recommend using Google to back up pictures, iwork.com/beta to back up any mac files, and a music network for other music/media)

    Good luck!

I cant tell you which one you have but you have a scam/rogue "antivirus" ... Gameday gave great advice and my advice below is just sort of an "echo" of alot of what he has said already

    ------------------------------------

These are a few tips to help you clean your computer of various types of infections. I am not saying this is a shore-fire way of getting rid of everything, but it can get rid of most infection related issues.

Some of these scanners (to fully get rid of infections) have to be ran in Safe Mode. To do that, before the Windows “Welcome Logo”, press F8 and in the menu that now appears, hit one of the “boot into safe mode” options.

If you have been infected with one of the fake antivirus/malware scanners: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/ is a great resource on how to remove them automatically and manually. There are more specific tools for each specific infection and they have helped MANY users here

    -------------

    Anti-viruses -

Both of these top two scanners have similar (Great) detection rates and are “neck and neck” as the best Free anti-virus if you ask me. Some sites say Avira is difficult to use, but I disagree.

    1) Avast – FREE - ( http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download )

    2) Avira – FREE - ( http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus )

    ---------------------------

Those are Free, but if you feel the need to want to pay for one (for whatever reason), try (3) Eset NOD32 ( http://www.eset.com/) , which provides great protection and no system lag

    ---------------------------

    Malware/Spyware related -

These are great programs to have, but do not confuse them with anti-viruses. AV's can detect malware and these scanners COULD detect viruses, but my advice would be to have both types of scanners on your system.

    MalwareBytes ( http://www.malwarebytes.org/ )

I have seen people with AV scanners like Norton think they are malware free and they (with computer issues) scan with MB and then they find they are loaded with malware.

    ------------------------------------------

For badly infected computers here are a few more options:

    ComboFix ( http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-us...

I have seen ComboFix, first-hand help computers that were badly infected; new users, should only use this if reformatting SEEMS like the only hope, after MalwareBytes “fails”.

Some options for some infections that block security software like Malwarebytes and your AV from removing them, by disabling the infections “blocking” feature are:

    RKill ( http://preview.tinyurl.com/2dnzgjf )

    SmitfraudFix ( http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/how-... )

    Good Luck,

DO NOT PAY THEM ANY MONEY!

    That's the first step...

Next step, boot up in safe mode and delete the virus, and install AVG.
