you have most likely restored the iPod or you tried to sync with a different computer. the new iTunes software only erases one section at a time I believe. you can choose to sync only music or only apps, ect. by choosing that tab in the iPhone sync screen. if your like most people, you in fact did not pay $1.29 per song and therefore cannot transfer purchases. apps will always transfer onto the PC unless of course your iPod is jailbroken. if you wish to put your library on a new computer you have a few options:

    • back up music from other PC on DATA CDs (blank CDs, but write them as data CDs so that you can fit about 80-100 songs per CD instead of like 20)

•google a software that transfers music from iPod to computer OR buy a software that does this well (such as TouchCopy [$25] which I used when my computer died suddenly ad I had to use my phone to restore music)

If you synced with another computer before, it has to delete all the data including apps music-everything- I'm not sure if this will work but try it: go to iTunes plug in your iPod touch(don't let it sync yet) then click On the top left(I think it's called FILE) and go to the bottom where it says transfer purchases

It could be saying this because your are connecting to iTunes from a different computer than the one you originally set up your iPod on. If this is the case, transfer your music from your original computer onto iTunes on this computer, let it erase and then sync the songs.
